2 IOPs Indirect Object Pronouns

3 IOPs IOPs are used to replace the ‘person’ that is receiving what is being verbed in the sentence. (must have prior knowledge) (many times used in an answer) the WHO/RECIPIENT of the Direct Object Usually people

4 IOPs There MUST be a direct object (DO) in order to have an indirect object (IO). Sometimes the DO is not given, but is understood in the sentence. I read a book to her. I read to her. (“Her” is receiving (the book) in both cases.)

5 IOPs me (to/for me) nos (to/for us) ---------------------------------- te (to/for you)os (to/for y’all) ---------------------------------- le (to/for him/her)les (to/for them)

6 IOPs -placed directly before the conjugated verb He gives money to me. We prepare food for her. Él me da dinero. Le preparamos la comida. -attached to an infinitive, gerund or command I want to give advice to you. Yo quiero darte los consejos.

7 IOPs Remember: - Used in same fashion as DOPs - Must have a DO to have an IO. - Replaces the recipient of the DO. - Must clarify if 3 rd person (as always). - Cannot be the subject of the sentence. ***key -- if it is to or for there is an IO look for “a” or “para”

8 1.I sell the sweater to her. 2.You read me stories. 3.We buy toys for you. 4.They are showing photos to us. 5.She cleans the living room for them. 6.I design buildings for him. 7.She cuts my hair for me. 8.The fireman puts out fires for us.

9 1.¿Quién te da dinero? 2.¿Quién nos dice la tarea? 3.¿Me regalas? 4.¿Les presentas a las chicas a los chicos? 5.¿Le leemos a Juan? 6.¿Le pides información al médico? 7.¿Nos apaga el incendio, el bombero? 8.¿Quién me enseña el francés?

10 IOPs - Traduzcan 1.Tell them the joke! 2.We teach him languages. 3.She serves you the food and you tell her its good. 4.You lend the bike to me and I give it back to you. 5.They introduce me to him. 6.We send letters to y’all and you send them back to us. 7.I ask for help from the nurse and she gives me medicine. 8.She’s going to make cookies for us.

11 DOPs AND IOPs TOGETHER!! Many times direct and indirect pronouns are used together. Just remember: Indirect before direct, reflexive 1 st of all! *All other rules apply.

12 DOP AND IOP I gave them to you. What did I give?Them (los) Who received?You (te) Use the rules & remember indirect before direct. Yo te los di. (i) (d)

13 BUT...... It’s not always as easy as it seems…….. NEVER use a double “L” le los, le las, le lo, le la, les los, les las, etc… INSTEAD change the first le or les (the IOP) to ‘SE’ then follow with the appropriate lo, la, los, las (DOP) Don’t forget the specify when needed.

14 I gave them to her. Yo se los di. (a ella) She gave it to them. Ella se lo dio. (a ellos).

15 Using Reflexives too?? It’s just this simple…. Indirect before direct, reflexive first of all!! However you’ll probably never use all 3 in one sentence. Most commonly, Indirect –Direct or Reflexive – Direct
