US Foreign Policy The US controls several overseas territories US has a booming economy US has a booming economy Theodore Roosevelt becomes President after McKinley is assassinated. Panama Canal Issue PROBLEM: Panama is a province of Columbia, but they don’t want to give it up.PROBLEM: Panama is a province of Columbia, but they don’t want to give it up. Presidents and their Foreign Policies

Showing America’s Power In 1907, Pres. Roosevelt sent part of the United States Navy on a cruise around the world. Great White Fleet- White ships sailed the world showing how powerful the Navy was. The U.S. often had to defend governments that were unpopular to the inhabitants. Also, because many countries feared the United States, they turned to them for help.

Teddy Roosevelt and Big Stick Diplomacy The US is the “Big Stick” (Navy) USA becomes International Police Power Roosevelt Corollary- Counteracted the Monroe Doctrine “See that neighboring countries are stable orderly, and prosperous.” Negotiated a treaty between Russia and Japan who were at war. Took over Dominican Republic when it went bankrupt and paid off its debts. This means US will intervene in other countries when it’s in our “best interest” Did this to keep China open to trade Wins Teddy the Nobel Peace Prize US is a force in international policy

William Howard Taft and Dollar Diplomacy Wanted to be able to trade with China and keep peace in Latin America. Wanted to “replace bullets with dollars” by investing in foreign economies.Wanted to “replace bullets with dollars” by investing in foreign economies. Our interventions were not welcome in Latin American countries. Bad investments in China
