Philosopher. He believed that absolute standards did exist for truth and justice. He encouraged Greeks to go farther and question themselves and their moral character. He once said, ”The unexamined life is not worth living.” He devoted his life to gaining self-knowledge. He created a question-and-answer approach to teaching, known as the Socratic Method.

Philosopher, and student of Socrates. He wrote down the conversations of Socrates. He wrote his most famous work, The Republic. In it, he set forth his vision of a perfectly governed society. It was not a democracy. In this ideal society, all citizens would fall into 3 groups: farmers and artisans, warriors, and the ruling class, which consisted of a philosopher-king. In 387 B.C, he founded a school of philosophy called the Academy.

Philosopher, and one of Plato’s brightest students. He questioned the nature of the world and of human belief, thought, and knowledge. He invented a method for arguing according to rules of logic. He later applied this method to problems in the fields of psychology, physics, and biology. His work provides a basis of the scientific method used today. In 335 B.C, he opened his own school of philosophy called the Lyceum. It eventually rivaled the Academy. He also tutored Alexander, son of King Philip II.
