PASSOVER LESSONS What does it mean to me?

Beginning Found in Exodus 12 10th day, 1 yr. old lamb/goat, unblemished 14th day, slain, blood on the doorposts Eat with loins gird, staff, sandals, in haste No foreigner or uncircumcised to eat Roasted, unleavened bread, bitter herbs Eaten or burned up, no bone broken

For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. (Exodus 12:12 ESV) …you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the LORD's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped. (Exodus 12:27 ESV)

5 Major Passovers Numbers 9:1 Still at Sinai

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If any one of you or of your descendants is unclean through touching a dead body, or is on a long journey, he shall still keep the Passover to the LORD. In the second month on the fourteenth day at twilight they shall keep it. They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. (Numbers 9:9-11 ESV)

Celebration of deliverance, looking to the future 5 Major Passovers Celebration of deliverance, looking to the future Numbers 9:1 Still at Sinai Unclean? Journey? Eat it in 2nd month After 2nd Passover, set out toward Canaan

5 Major Passovers Joshua 5:10-11 While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. (Joshua 5:10-11 ESV) Joshua 5:10-11

Remembering the past is preparation for the future 5 Major Passovers God CAN deliver Joshua 5:10-11 5:2-9- first had to circumcise this new generation Remembering the past is preparation for the future

5 Major Passovers God CAN deliver 2 Chronicles 30, Hezekiah opens and cleanses the temple in 1st year Messengers mocked but many came 30:2, kept it in 2nd month because priests weren’t consecrated After these things and these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself. (2 Chronicles 32:1 ESV)

5 Major Passovers 2 Chronicles 34-35- Temple cleansed and book of the Law found No Passover like it had been kept in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel had kept such a Passover as was kept by Josiah, and the priests and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (2 Chronicles 35:18 ESV)

Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, … Because they have forsaken me and have made offerings to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands, therefore my wrath will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched. But to the king of Judah, …Regarding the words that you have heard, because your heart was tender …, and you have humbled yourself before me and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the LORD. Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place and its inhabitants (2 Chronicles 34:24-28 ESV)

Then he made all who were present in Jerusalem and in Benjamin join in it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. And Josiah took away all the abominations from all the territory that belonged to the people of Israel and made all who were present in Israel serve the LORD their God. All his days they did not turn away from following the LORD, the God of their fathers. (2 Chronicles 34:32-33 ESV)

5 Major Passovers God CAN deliver 2 Chronicles 34-35- Temple cleansed and book of the Law found After these things and these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself. (2 Chronicles 32:1 ESV)

5 Major Passovers Ezra 6:11-22- after 16 yrs the temple is built

On the fourteenth day of the first month, the returned exiles kept the Passover. For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; all of them were clean. So they slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the returned exiles, for their fellow priests, and for themselves. It was eaten by the people of Israel who had returned from exile, and also by every one who had joined them and separated himself from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to worship the LORD, the God of Israel. And they kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with joy, for the LORD had made them joyful and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, so that he aided them in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel. (Ezra 6:19-22 ESV)

5 Major Passovers A celebration of deliverance from captivity and from present enemies and from God’s wrath Ezra 6:11-22- after 16 yrs the temple is built 2 Chron. 35- Josiah 2 Chron. 30- Hezekiah Joshua 5- Joshua Numbers 9-Moses

Referenced in the New Testament Acts 12:3-4- Passover of deliverance for Peter John 1:29- the lamb of God Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. (1 Corinthians 5:7 ESV)
