RAF9038 FINAL COORDINATION MEETING 2-5 December 2013 Arusha Tanzania

Self Assessment Tool Methodology Response Phase Analysis Phase Action Plan

Training on SAT & SARIS Two Technical Staff trained on SAT (2010 & 2011) & SARIS (2012) A third officer trained on SARIS (2013) thru’ FNRBA initiative Full Cycle of SAT Undertaken

Challenges The two main coordinators are stationed in two different Geographical locations One has had heavy workload in his workstation making it difficult to undertake SAT activities regularly The impact of SAT/SARIS undertaking is yet to be fully appreciated and embraced by Management

Outputs & Outcomes Kenya is Reviewing its Law with the view of include Regulation of Nuclear Reactors and SAT/SARIS will be useful in identifying Gaps, and what needs to be done to address them. Ongoing training at the IAEA in Drafting of Legislation will be useful in drafting of the new law and applicable regulations in Nuclear and Radiological applications

Peer Review Missions Kenya has had an INSServe and INSSP missions in 2012 & 2013 respectively and the outcomes will enhance appreciation towards SARIS methodology in matters of Nuclear Safety A Sub-Regional Peer Review mission, the outcome will be useful in the next cycle of SARIS (review).

As an Embarking nation on NPP Kenya will be required to request for an IRRS mission, in which case a fully fledged SARIS exercise will have to be undertaken as a pre-mission requirement & therefore the initial undertaking thru’ this project is a good preparation.

Conclusions & Recommendations I would urge the Agency to press on with completion of SAT/SARIS for African MS’s and to take every opportunity to continue sensitizing Management on the importance and benefits of undertaking SAT/SARIS now and in the long run I support the national and sub-regional networking approach to enable All African Member States achieve their goals in self assessment using the SARIS methodology
