Lambs Lane Primary School Progress Report January 2016

Background and Context Further changes to Ofsted inspections – Expectations raised again – New concept of ‘coasting schools’ – Focus on pupil progress and leadership New National Curriculum – Raised expectations Several Wokingham schools in similar position – Pupil premium – ‘closing the gap’ – Phonics New assessment system Reduced funding Political push to academies – David Cameron – Aug 2015

Governing Body Priorities 1.Set the school’s strategic direction 2.Hold the school to account 3.Manage and monitor school finances

Governing Body Expectations 1.High aspirations – Children, leadership, staff, governors, parents ……… 2.High standards – Teaching, governance, leadership, planning, marking, administration, safeguarding, finances, health & safety ………….. in everything we do 3.Rapid and accelerated progress – Consistent and sustained progress for every child and every group 4.Consistency (9 references in Ofsted report) 5.Challenge (6 references in Ofsted report) 6.Sustainability – Leadership, key areas (e.g. inclusion, safeguarding), governance, administration … 7.Impact 8.Evidence

Progress Report 1.Direct accountability for all staff – Attendance at governing body meetings – Governor monitoring visits to gather evidence of impact and progress – External monitoring and validation – performance, progress, leadership … 2.Challenging and stretching targets for pupil progress 3.Robust action plan – Impact and evidence based – Shared ownership and responsibility for improvement – Holding colleagues to account 4.Consistency e.g. – Performance management – Marking and assessment – Implementation of plan

Progress Report 1.Has the school made progress? – Improved SATs e.g. Reading, but not yet consistent at all levels – Improved progress and attainment in Early Years and KS1 – Higher aspirations, expectations and challenge – Implementation of new assessment system – Accountability at all levels across the school – Increased leadership capacity that is sustainable – External verification of progress – Local Authority review 2.Where is further improvement required? – Progress – need data to support judgements – Assessment – need time to embed and ‘tweak’ – Consistency – minor adjustments – Evidence of impact – at all levels 3.Is Lambs Lane a ‘Good’ School?

Is Lambs Lane a ‘Good’ School? Yes, …………. but we need more time Data – We don’t yet have enough data (results) to support judgements Evidence – We need time to implement the plan and provide evidence of impact Impact – Everything we do needs to show impact on pupil progress Consistency – Inconsistencies have to be ironed out Progress – This must be sustained at all levels Not forgetting the basics: – safeguarding, eSafety, behaviour, health and safety, inclusion, high achievers, website, legal requirements ………….

What can Parents do to help? Parent View – a key Ofsted measure Attendance – a key Ofsted measure Support at home – e.g. reading Pupil progress – Ask questions – Is my child making progress? – How much progress has my child made? – How do you know? – Can you show me the evidence?

Summary The journey continues, but considerable progress has been made The Ofsted goal posts have been moved again We’ve ‘raised the bar’ Expectations and aspirations are high We have a strong team Everyone is accountable and know they must make a contribution Solid foundations are in place The adjustments are minor, rather than fundamental We need time to provide hard evidence of progress Assessment is a challenge, but we must ‘hold our nerve’ Parents and pupils are crucial to success Thank you for your support
