Aims Overview of current inspection arrangements Identify key changes for schools What does this mean for PE and sport? What does this mean for you?

‘Better inspection for all’ Future of inspection | 3 Further education and skills Non- association independent schools Short inspections for good providers Two year-old offer Baseline exercise Direct contracting of inspectors and changes to workforce Maintained schools and academies Early Years New Common Inspection Framework (CIF)

New Common Inspection Framework A Common Inspection Framework for schools, further education and skills (FES) providers, non-association independent schools and registered early years providers from September 2015. Inspectors will make the same graded judgements on the same areas across all the remits:  leadership and management;  teaching, learning and assessment;  personal development, behaviour and welfare;  outcomes for children and learners. and greater emphasis on safeguarding and curriculum. This will provide greater clarity, coherence and comparability for users, learners, parents and employers.

Key changes to the way we work We have:  changed how we source, train, contract and oversee all inspectors who lead and team on schools and FES inspections.  tightened up the selection criteria that all inspectors have to meet  increased the percentage of current practitioners on our inspection teams  Introduced working relationships between contracted Ofsted Inspectors (OI) and Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI)  Provided on-going free training and professional development for our Ofsted Inspector workforce Future of inspection | 5

Short inspections for good providers Frequent, shorter inspections for good schools, academies and FES providers – approximately every three years.  More proportionate: the right sort of inspections at the right time.  Identify decline early or give schools/providers the opportunity to demonstrate improvement sooner.  Designed to ask if the quality of provision is being sustained, and what is the capacity of leaders to drive improvement?  Help support rising standards with greater professional dialogue.  More regular reporting to parents/carers, learners and employers.

System Leadership Skilled senior managers ensure that all middle managers are also effective at leading and monitoring teaching Frequent and rigorous diagnostic monitoring of teaching and learning Use evidence and engage staff in developing improvement plans Make use of identified best practice within the school, for example, coaching Use other schools to train and provide vision of ‘outstanding practice’ Deliver high quality professional development Monitor the delivery and impact of initiatives – achieve consistency Targeted support and robust performance management where staff do not respond to change Analysis of schools that successfully improved their teaching

Leaders provide the role models for the rest of the institution’ (HMCI Annual Report 2012)

Add presentation title to master slide | 10 2015 ‘HMI will focus on leadership above all else when they visit good schools during the new short inspections. Their principal task will be to determine whether the leadership team, including governors, has the capacity not only to maintain existing standards but to improve them further’ ‘HMI will report their findings in a concise letter… Which will confirm that the provider remains good, explain what inspectors saw, and set out specific areas for future improvement. Much of the letter will be given over to how leadership across the school or institution is maintaining standards and building capacity for further improvements’ (HMCI Speech – FOEI launch 2015)

What can you do as leaders of PE and sport? articulate an ambitious vision for PE and sport, and implement it fully demonstrate high expectations & lead improvements in teaching, learning and assessment routinely assess the quality of PE teaching and link it with outcomes target teaching where outcomes are not high enough ensure that PE contributes to narrowing gaps contribute an enriched curriculum with breadth, depth and relevance prepare pupils for the next stage of their education or employment ensure they are ready for life in modern British society share what you do in PE and sport with headteachers and governors seek the views of parents and carers, and pupils, use the findings keep students safe, stimulated and fully engaged.
