Week 6 9/21—9/25 Ms. Cluff

Quick News… Introduction paragraphs are due today. Take these out and open your notebook to page 11R. I will come around and initial them. – You will peer edit each other’s paragraph and I will look it over. You will get two grades- rough draft credit and peer edit credit. Body Paragraphs today  HW: write one body paragraph (you can write 2 or 3 if you want me to look over more one). Retakes… (one week from the date I pass the quiz/test/essay/etc. back to you.) Late work… You have ONE week to turn in late work. Absent?... You still need to do the work and take the quizzes. You have ONE week to make them up without penalty. Tutoring… 3:15-4:15 I will be there on Wednesdays. This week, I will be here on Tuesday from 3:15 to 3:45 since we don’t have school on Wednesday. Major News… I NEVER do this but… I’m extending the due date of your essay to Thursday (p. 1) / Friday (p. 2, 4, 6, 7) of next week.

(Page 12L) Body Paragraphs Notes You will have 3 body paragraphs Each body paragraph will focus on one of your reasons why _____ is the most important value/priority/beliefs. (The reasons should be on your outline on 10R) You must have a topic sentence for each body paragraph, which will give an overview of what that paragraph is going to be about. This sentence will come as the first sentence in each of your body paragraphs.

(Page 12L) Body Paragraphs Notes You must back your reason with valid evidence. (facts, expert quotations, statistics, examples, proof) You need to make a connection as to why this reason proves your claim. (reason #1 supports that ____ is an important value/belief/ priority because…) A transition wraps up the paragraph and tells your reader what the next paragraph will be about. (____ is not only important because ___, it is also important because ____.)

(Page 12R) Body Paragraphs Outline Sentence #1- Topic Sentence (____ is an important value/belief/priority because reason #1) Sentences #2—3- Back up your claim in sentence #1 with evidence. Sentences #4—6- Make a connection between your claim and your reason. (How does this prove that you are right?) Sentence #7- Transition sentence. (Build a bridge between this paragraph and the next. Your reader should know what your next paragraph is going to be about. “Not only does _____, it also ______.”) You will do this 3 times with each of your reasons.

Homework!!!!! You will turn in one of your body paragraphs on Thursday/Friday for me to look over and provide feedback. You will write this paragraph on a separate piece of paper. You may turn in more than one body paragraph if you want me to look over all of your body paragraphs, but only one is required. If you only write one body paragraph at this time, and want me to look over the other body paragraphs, then you will need to come see me before or after school.

Turn your homework into the pink box in the back of the room. Then, set up a separate sheet of paper for your vocabulary quiz and clear off your desk.

A few things about your essays…. – Follow the outlines in our notebook (“Outline”) – Don’t’ write “…value/belief/priority…” in your essay. – Avoid 1 st person as much as possible unless you are using it for evidence. – Instead of “you”, use “people” – Late Intro and body paragraphs will be accepted up to one week late, so show them to me. – *You might want to write this on page 12L or 12R… Transition from Body #3 to conclusion  “____(reason #3 is just one of the many reasons ____(topic) is so important.”
