Then lead into your thesis, in which you state that person’s American Dream. Each of the body paragraphs should reflect the individual aspects of the dream which the prompt requests Conclusion paragraph will be a sum up of that person’s dream journey and a final statement about that character’s part in the novel’s development of plot or theme

5 Activity, 5/7 (Tuesday) During class today: Turn in their graphic organizers on Ch. 4-9 and write your introduction paragraph: Introduction paragraph: Start the essay by introducing your character (brief description of who the person is in the novel), including the name of the book and the author of the book. Then lead into your thesis, in which you state that person’s American Dream. If you are struggling with the essay, I am available for remediation/tutoring help: Den Time on Thursday and Friday Lunch time today through Thursday

6 Activity, 5/8 If you were absent yesterday, turn in your graphic organizer at the beginning of class today and write your introduction paragraph during class If you have been absent since last Friday, you need to take the Ch quiz during class today Be prepared to turn in stamped grades on Friday Begin writing your body paragraphs. Your first body paragraph should explain how the dream was formed. You need to support it with as much textual evidence as you have, and explain how each piece of text proves it helped to form the dream of your thesis.

7 Activity, 5/9 If I have not read your introduction paragraph, show it to me today during class. Your first body paragraph should explain how the dream was formed. (Rely on textual information that details background of your character.) The next body paragraph should outline the successes enjoyed by your character in any of his/her dream pursuits (i.e., any steps made to accomplish or enjoy their dream). ALL body paragraphs must be supported with quoted text evidence (with page numbers). Your elaboration is how that quote supports your point (don’t repeat what the quotes says; explain how it relates).

8 Announcement concerning remediation/makeup work:
Stamp grades are due today (Place in the tray today) All remediation work for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters must be turned in ( rubric or paper of notification must be in tray) by May 20th. (not accepted later, even if absent) All remediation work and stamp grades for 4th quarter must be turned in (rubric or paper of notification must be in tray) by May 24th. (not accepted later, even if absent) HON: VLT formatives must be made up during lunch M-Th. or during Den Time next week (May 13-16) (no later)

9 Text evidence: You don’t have to quote the entire sentence if you don’t need all of it, but you do have to quote what is necessary for the reader of the essay to know (don’t expect reader to go look up the quote) If you leave out a portion of the quote (a portion of the sentence), put … in the place of the left out words (again, don’t put the dots in place of words of the quote the reader does need) Be sure to put the book’s page # with every quote used Elaboration: Don’t tell me what the quotes says; tell me how the quote relates to your point and your thesis

10 Activity, 5/10 Finish writing body paragraphs:
Remember to transition to and remain focused on the topic of that paragraph Use your entire resource when citing text evidence; make sure you get evidence from the first, middle, and end of where that character appears in the book in order to avoid “only partial use of resource” on the rubric (rating of a 2) Don’t use only one quote of evidence for a point if you have more you can use Elaboration: connecting the evidence to the point of the paragraph Conclude each body paragraph by connecting to the thesis Write conclusion paragraph: Conclusion paragraph will be a sum up of that person’s dream journey and a final statement about that character’s part in the novel’s development of plot or theme
