4 What is an persuasive essay?  An essay written to make someone agree with you.  Persuasive is more emotional.  Argument is more logical.

5 What does every essay/letter include?  Introduction.  Body  Conclusion.

6 Introduction  Introduction – Clearly and briefly tells readers what you are writing about and gets them interested.  States your position on the issue.  What should your introduction be like?

9 Thesis Statement  Your introduction must include a thesis statement, which states the main idea of your essay – your position on the topic.  Thesis statement is the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.  Thesis has three parts/prongs which list the three main ideas in the order they are to be presented in the essay.  Students should be able to ___ because ____, _____ and ________.

10 The Body  Body – Supporting paragraphs Where you tell your readers in detail what you want them to know about your topic. 12 So, just like our business letters and our expository essays, our persuasive/argument essays will have:  A Beginning  A Middle  An End

13 Prewriting Think about your topic. Use the ideas of Depth and Complexity to help you think about your topic.

14 Prewriting Use a graphic organizer or an outline. After that, the essay almost writes itself.

15 Five Paragraph Essay  What paragraphs will need to be included?

16 Essay 1 – Classroom Seating  Should students be able to choose their own seats in class? Write a letter to me arguing either side of the argument.  Students should be able to choose their own seats in class because ___________, ______________, and _____________.  Remember to address the counterargument in your third body paragraph.  Due tomorrow – Turn in your graphic organizer. Tomorrow you will finish your first draft and your final draft (stapled on top).  This is an assessment grade.
