Six Components of Health  1. Physical Health-eating right, regular exercise, being recommended body weight. Also free of disease and sickness  2. Emotional Health-express emotions in positive, nondestructive way. Copes with unpleasant emotions and not overwhelmed by them.  3. Social Health- having quality relationships with people you come in contact with. Respects others

Six Components of Health  4. Mental Health- influenced by emotional health. Recognize reality and cope with daily life. High Self- esteem  5. Spiritual Health- harmonious relationships with other living things and have a spiritual direction and purpose. Live according to ones ethics and values  6. Environmental Health- keep the environment around you clean, safe and enjoyable

Wellness: Striving for Optimal Health  Many components of health are affected by other components  Being Healthy is a balance of all theses components  Wellness- achievements of a persons best in all 6 components  Unrealistic to think all 6 will be perfect all the time.  Strive for wellness

4 Influences on Wellness  1. Hereditary Influences-traits you inherit from your parents  Example- parent has diabetes; does not mean you will get it but you are at higher risk than normal 2. Social Influences- health influenced by relationships example: Friends influence your decisions in a negative or positive way

3. Cultural Influences- values, beliefs, practices shared by people example: Asian Culture eats lots of vegtables/seafood in diet; believed to be why Asian groups have lower risk of Heart Disease 4. Environmental Influences- your surroundings  Examples- pollution, safety regulations, availability and use of medical care- ALL effect your health

Take Charge of Your Wellness  Knowledge-be informed on how to make good choices  Lifestyle- Put knowledge into action  Attitude- GREATLY AFFECTS CHANGE
