Hawks News Network

Other Fun Aspects!

-Google Plus Account -Advisor needs an account to record -Viewers need an account to join circle -See your ITRT or tech support for simple directions -We presented the information at a faculty meeting Getting Started- Set up an account

-Create a Google Plus Community -Others will join this community via their Google Plus Account -All videos will be shared with one click via the community -Other options -Link to a website -Directly from YouTube (if accessible at your school)

Getting Started- Set up an account 1)Click on Communities on left hand drop down menu 2) Create a community. I called it Hawks on Air -Make sure to select a private community 3) Invite people to join the community. Mass is a great way to do this. (We have News) Note: You must approve their request.

-Varying grades and genders -Start simple -Just one anchor and cameraman -You can act as the director -Tip: Don’t direct and be an anchor! -Once ready add additional positions -I would recommend a student director being the next added position. Getting Started- Recruit Students

Getting Started- Student Positions JobDescription Lead Anchor and CameramanGreeting, announcements, Moment of Silence, sign-off Co-AnchorAdditional announcements, sometimes weather or moment in history On Location and CameramanGuests such as athletic teams, special student recognitions, drawings for positive behavior or special event. Also does pledge LunchDaily Lunch Menu (added at student request) DirectorControl recordings, which camera is live, and displays flag for pledge and moment of silence image

Let’s Try It! I am going to run through it to show you how fast and easy it is to set up! Then we will do it together!

The Daily Run Through Create the Event Go to Google Plus and create an event using the left hand drop down menu Select Hangouts *Note: When the new Google Plus rolls out, you’ll need to go to hangouts.google.com directly. hangouts.google.com

The Daily Run Through Select Hangouts on Air across the top and create a Hangout.

The Daily Run Through Enter the information in the pop-up box Enter the specific date and estimated time. Time isn’t a locking in factor. Once you start recording, your circle can view the video.

The Daily Run Through Important Notes When Creating an Event Come up with a basic naming system (Hawks On Air- 8/10) Audience is your morning announcements community Make sure to keep it private by keeping the ensuring it has the buildings beside the audience. You must verify your authentic YouTube account. Note: You can create events the day of or some prefer to create them all at the beginning of the week.

The Daily Run Through Starting the Recording

The Daily Run Through This is where you invite your cameramen. I created Google accounts for the cameras all using the same passwords so anyone can log onto each. I then created a circle with only the camera s so it is easy to invite them. Click Invite

The Daily Run Through Once cameras accept the invite, they will appear as a box across the bottom. You can talk to one another but recording and broadcasting won’t begin until you click

Important Features Lock the Image Each available camera will appear across the bottom of the screen. Click on the camera you want and ensure it has a white box around it. This locks it in. Only the director can see the white box to know who is locked in. Otherwise, cameras bounce around based off noise.

Important Features Open a chat box for cameras to chat back and form while recording. Good for posting who talks in what order Screen share allows the director to broadcast their screen. Great for broadcasting flag as well as a quote for moment of silence. Open control panel for director (see next slide) Fun effects such as hats, mustaches, backgrounds, sound effects, etc. Allows you to draw on image or enter text (used with lunch)

Important Features Control Panel Allows cameras to be muted or turned off by director As many as 10 cameras can join.

Tips and Tricks Start simple Know your student recruits Get a very technology savvy director and your life will be easy! Be okay with trial and error! Crashes happen (a lot)- go old school as needed

Tips and Tricks- Technology Remember to “lock in” Be careful of sound backfeed if computers are close to one another Use a mouse Try an external camera and microphone for higher quality Ipads are now compatible on some networks App- Limited features and watch covering the mic
