Greek Gods Greeks believed that the Gods lived on Mt. Olympus, the highest point in Greece and from there controlled nature that was based on their moods.

Greeks Thought their Deities (Gods) were: everywhere – seas, mts, forests, storms, etc. Superhuman - with human emotions (love, jealousy, anger, etc.) Lived Atop MT. Olympus in Northern Greece

Patron Deities - Protected particular cities (or individuals…) Exs. Athena- Athens

Greek religion included the use of Temples/altars/ Offerings/sacrifices Temple of nike (victory) Hera’s altar

Greek religion Influenced (and they are lasting legacies of) : Olympics – honored zeus Drama – festival of dionysis

Myths – traditional stories Explaining aspects of a culture or society or a natural phenomenon

* mythical Creatures Included: Fairies (Good) > assoc. with romance > Usually small in size

Nymphs (good) > Beautiful maidens living in forests, lakes, etc.

Harpies (bad) > part woman, part bird > Carried dead to underworld Demons (bad) > Intermediary between gods/men
