3  Aphrodite- Goddess of love, romance and beauty  Apollo- God of sun, light, and music, and medicine  Ares- God of war  Artemis- Goddess of the hunt, forest, wildlife, and the moon.  Athena- Goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts  Demeter- Goddess of Agriculture

4  Hephaestus- God of fire and the forge  Hera- God of marriage, familiar with magic  Hermes- Messenger of the gods  Hestia- Goddess of the home, symbolized by the hearth  Poseidon- God of the Sea, horses, and earthquakes  Zeus- King of the gods, god of the sky, symbolized by the thunderbolt

5  Achilles- Main hero in the Trojan war, had one fatal flaw; his heel  Agamemnon- King of Mycenae, leader of Greek forces at Troy  Atalanta- Famous runner and huntress  Daedalus- Famous architect, painter, and sculptor.  Heracles- super strong hero

6  Jason- leader of the Argonauts, brought the golden fleece to Thessaly.  Odysseus- Hero in the Trojan war, after the war he was sent on a ten year journey to get home  Perseus- founder of Mycenae, he also killed Medusa  Sysyphus- founder of Corinth famous for his wealth smartness and his cunningness.

7  Argus- had as many as 100 eyes all over his body, and was the guard of Hera  Cerberus- giant powerful three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to the underworld  Cyclops- giant one eyed monsters that made lightning and thunderbolts for Zeus to use  Gorgons- had hair made of serpents and would turn anyone to stone if they looked into their eyes

8  Hydra- A giant poisonous snake with nine heads. Every time a head got cut off two would grow in its place.  Minotaur- Man-Eating monster with the head of a bull  Scylla- a monster with many dog heads that ate sailors alive  Charybdis- a giant whirlpool  Sirens- Giant winged creatures with the head of a woman that lured sailors to them with their singing.

9  Greeks valued: ◦ Cleverness and wit ◦ Faithfulness and loyalty ◦ Strength ◦ Dancing, singing, and storytelling ◦ Hospitality ◦ The gods

10  The Trojan War started when Paris captured Menelaus’s wife Helen to be his wife.  Menelaus wanted revenge and gathered an army and went to war  The war raged on for nine years and the Greek just needed to get inside of Troy  To do so they built a giant horse and the Trojans brought it inside the city walls.

11  The Greeks then came out of the horse and killed everyone.  They divided the spoils and set sail for home  For some of the Greeks (like Odysseus) this was a long and difficult trip.
