5 Greek Mythology and Religion  Mythology – the story (or myth) of the Greek Gods / Goddesses.  There were 12 Important Greek deities living on Mt Olympus  Most are related and each has their own story or myth!

6 Greek Mythology and Religion Greek religion is polytheistic Greek Deities held human forms and human qualities Greeks used their religion to explain natural phenomenon (seasonal change/storms), human qualities and events in their lives

7 Greek Mythology Based on polytheistic religion – Believed in many gods – Gods explained natural phenomena, human qualities and life events

9 Greek Mythology Myths – traditional stories of the Greek Gods / Goddesses. Most are related and each has their own story or myth! Gods could even take on human emotions like love, hate or jealousy

10 Origins of the gods The god of the heavens (Uranus) and the earth (Gaia) had several children, known as the Titans.

11 One of the Titans, Chronus, was so afraid that his children would overthrow him that he swallowed them whole when they were born. He eventually swallowed his first five children… Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter and Hestia.

12 When Chronus’ wife, Rhea, had her sixth child (Zeus) she wanted to put an end to this. She gave Chronus a stone wrapped up like a baby, which caused him to vomit up his children.

13 Zeus and his brothers and sisters overthrew Chronos. Zeus became the king of the gods but agreed to share the world with his brothers: – Poseidon- oceans and the sea – Hades - underworld/afterlife (dead) – Zeus - sky/heavens

29 Apollo Apollo – God of Light, music, poetry, medicine and knowledge – Symbols = snake

30 Greek Mythology and Religion APOLLO – Son of Zeus God of Light – Drives the Sun across the sky in his chariot

32 Poseidon god of the sea Symbol - weapon was the trident, capable of shaking the earth and causing water to flow. Second most powerful god after Zeus Brothers with Zeus and Hades

33 Hades god of the underworld and death. Brother to Zeus and Poseidon Married Persephone, after abducting her. He was tricked into becoming lord of the underworld, ruling over the dead. Spends most of his time there. Seen as a greedy god (wants more subjects/dead).

34 Ares God of war (particularly brutal warfare) Son of Zeus Known to be aggressive and arrogant – Unpopular with gods and mortals because of this – Not invincible (he could even be beaten by mortals) – He could get hurt (and Zeus would have to heal him)

35 Hermes messenger god. Hermes' main role was as a messenger, esp. for Zeus Took souls to underworld Also made the Lyre (hand-held harp)

36 Gods and Goddesses The symbols and images of the gods and goddesses are still seen in western literature, art and architecture Example = roses

38 Greek Mythology Group Activity Using the textbook and your notes, complete your assigned god or goddess on your chart. In your groups you will make a poster and present it to the class. Your poster will have the name, image (symbol), and 3 facts about your god/goddess.
