Space Monkeys Conceptual Design Review Project Curious George Michael Bartek, Jacob Blakely, Katelynn Finn, Katie Fletcher, Lance Markovchick, Michael Skeen, Thomas Snow September 23, 2008

Mission Overview The BalloonSat Curious George shall ascend to an altitude of approximately thirty kilometers while using an attitude determination system to measure the horizontal angle of orientation and secondarily control the position of the satellite with momentum wheels to stabilize a digital camera in a fixed direction.

Drawings (in meters)

Why We are Doing This Simple and cheap ADCS subsystem. Main Mission-Determine where Satellite is oriented. Determine direction of pictures Sub Mission- Assess whether motors with disks are a sufficient substitute for momentum wheels.

Dividing Systems Four Subsystems –Attitude Determination –Attitude Control –Structure –Electronics Each subsystem will be constructed and tested individually, and then combined for final testing and flight.

Structure Foam Core consisting of six squares –Angled corners to make a flush seam –Use only one sheet of foam core –Seal with hot glue and tape

Attaching Sat to String PVC 5 mm in diameter through center –Allow 2.5 mm cord to run through –Ball bearing on bottom allowing box to rotate freely on flight string

The Camera There shall be a Plexiglas window to allow the camera to see through –Plexiglas shall be 1/8 inches thick. –Inlayed and secured in the Foam Core

Camera (continued) Face Camera pointing toward Plexiglas –Space 2.5 cm from glass to allow lens to extend and focus –Mount with duct tape and wire across the back –Allow camera to be retrieved

Heating Heater shall be mounted vertically in order to conserve space –Placed adjacent to the camera with resistors facing inwards so that the radiant heat shall warm the camera and the rest of the BalloonSat –Heater will be mounted to the wall with hot glue applied to the four corners as far so that the glue will not be weakened by the heat from the resistors

Sensing Temperature Place HOBO on opposite corner of BalloonSat from heater –Analyze coldest portion of the box. –With opposite corner shall counter balance heater and camera for aid in centering of mass –Stick sensor out of foam core 1.5 inches secured by hot glue

Setting up The Basic Stamp Place Basic Stamp on floor in front of HOBO –Control the digital compass and timing of the readings –Manipulate and interpret the data from the compass –Secure using duct tape and hot glue

Switches Four Switches used shall be placed on outside of the foam core on the top of the BalloonSat for easy access –Heater –Camera –Basic Stamp –Motors

Compass Compass will be mounted on floor of BalloonSat –Powered and controlled by the Basic Stamp –Hitachi HM55B Compass Module records the orientation of the camera and BalloonSat –Measure changes in Earth’s magnetic field –Records data as degrees off of north

Control Two electric motors in corners –Act as basic momentum wheels –Mount washers on end of motor cause an angular force –Work to stabilize the movement of the box during launch –Momentum wheels should resist any spinning motion of the BalloonSat

Functional Block Diagram

Testing - Testing will be performed for all of the subsystems including a cold test, an electric motor test, a staircase test, a whip test and a drop test. Structural tests will be done without the payloads inside, but rather weights to simulate the force without subjecting the payloads to damage before the flight. The electric motor test will judge the success of the motors as to whether or not they stabilize the BalloonSat effectively and aid in control.

Safety For safety, the team will use precautions such as gloves, safety goggles and tongs and will always be properly trained before using any equipment. Two people will always be present when using machinery to ensure safety and accuracy are always held to a high standard. Above all, the team will use common sense to judge the safety of their actions for themselves and others.

Schedule September 23 – Proposal Due October 2 - Hardware Ordered October 6 – Initial Design Completion for CDR October 20 – Final Design Completed October 23 – In-class demo October 27 – Initial construction complete November 4 & 6 – In-class mission simulation November 8 – Testing completed (including cold test) November 11 – Pre-launch inspection and launch readiness review November 14 – Final launch preparations complete, final weigh-in. Biggest Concerns –One of the Space Monkey’s biggest concerns are how effective the momentum wheels will be in resisting spinning of the BalloonSat on the flight string. –Our other concern is whether or not there will be any interference affecting the accuracy of the digital compass.
