2 Mission Overview The Balloon Sat. “ Stabilizer ” shall climb to approximately thirty kilometers carrying a CCD camera stabilization system that will be collecting video throughout much of the mission to prove that image stabilization on a near spacecraft is possible. Images collected will be of the ground throughout the entire flight to provide a reference point to confirm the performance of the system. 3 Design Overview The Stabilizer has been designed to carry out the mission as simply and effectively as possible. A Mini DVR recorder is integrated to record the images from the KPC-EX20 Exview CCD camera. HOBO data logger used to record temperature data to determine altitude Cannon powershot digital camera used to collect images of functioning stabilization system and horizon. A heater system is used to maintain a temperature above 0 degrees Celsius for the duration mission. The Stabilizer has been designed to carry out the mission as simply and effectively as possible. 11 Flight Predictions Team Cosmos predicts that all systems will function properly on launch day. The ExView CCD camera will record video at least up to Balloon burst. The box and its components will survive the landing sequence, and all components will stay in their designated locations throughout the mission Team Cosmos predicts that all systems will function properly on launch day. 12 Concerns “The Stabilizer” is quite a large box. Heating the unit at the extreme temperatures of near space will require the optimal performance of the heater. “The Stabilizer” is quite a large box. 14 (Level 1 1 ) The Satellite will record images from the CCD camera mounted to the gimbal system throughout the flight. (Level 1 2 ) The Satellite will use a HOBO data logger and an external temperature probe to measure the ascent and descent rates throughout the flight. (Level 1 3 ) The Satellite shall be constructed of foam core to reduce weight and maintain rigidity. (Level 1 4 ) The Satellite shall contain a heater to maintain an internal temperature above zero degrees Celsius.

15 (Level 2 1 -Power) The Satellite shall be powered by various batteries to optimize the longevity of data collection. (Level 2 2 -Thermal) Insulation will be used inside of the satellite, in addition to a heater to maintain the internal temperature requirement. (Level 2 3 -Science) The satellite shall contain an aluminum gimbal system utilizing small bearings to stabilize the CCD camera ’ s imaging.
