Space Monkeys Launch Readiness Review Project Curious George November 11, 2008 Project Curious George November 11, 2008

Mission Statement The BalloonSat Curious George shall ascend to an altitude of 30 km using an attitude determination system to measure the horizontal orientation of the camera and control the position of the BalloonSat with momentum wheels to stabilize the box. The Space Monkeys team is sending a BalloonSat to employ simple and inexpensive components for an ADCS subsystem. The main mission is to use attitude determination to record the orientation of the camera throughout the flight as it takes pictures to determine the direction of the pictures taken by the camera. Also, the team is determined to assess whether or not an electric momentum wheel can be constructed using a small motor. 3 Design Overview

Electric Motor Test The effectiveness of the motors was tested by spinning the BalloonSat with and without the motors on. The number of times the BalloonSat spun decreased once the motors were turned on.

Digital Compass Interference Test There was no difference in the readings of the digital compass when the momentum wheels were turned on

Cold Test The motors, compass, camera, and accelerometer worked perfectly throughout the entire cold test and performed as expected. On our first cold test, our heater failed very early into the test due to an apparent short in the circuit. The heater was repaired and extra insulation was added to the BalloonSat, and kept the internal temperature above 0°Celsius on a subsequent test for over two hours even though our heater failed during the test. 7 Digital Compass The changes in readings are due to team members rotating the cold test cooler during the test to ensure that the compass functions correctly.

Internal Temperature Minimum: -6.31°C, Below 0° after 2 hours. Heater was cold to touch after test

External Temperature Minimum Temperature: -45.35°C

Accelerometer The oscillations in the graph are due to the vibration of the box due to the momentum wheels

Image Test

Electric Motors The motors could easily be heard throughout the entire test. There was a noticeable drop in volume of the electric motors vibrating and rubbing against the Styrofoam with 25 minutes left in the test. The accelerometer data also verifies that the motors ran throughout the whole test. The motors could easily be heard throughout the entire test. 13 Structural Tests The structural tests (whip, staircase and drop) were performed at Muenzinger and successfully completed with minimal damage to the structure

Drop Test

Whip Test

Staircase Test

Prediction on Flight Results We expect our camera, digital compass, accelerometer, HOBO, and heater to work exactly as planned. We predict that our momentum wheels will run for the entire flight but that they will only have a minimal effect in resisting the spinning of the BalloonSat. 18 Biggest Worries Heater failure Momentum wheels – rubbing on other objects or the walls of the BalloonSat. Heater failure Momentum wheels – rubbing on other objects or the walls of the BalloonSat.
