BalloonSat “Optimism Prime” Team “Thumbs Up” Conceptual Design Review Nick Lenk, Greg Nelson, Eddie Cyrus, Jake Varey, Chase Pritchett, Brian Inglis 9/23/08

Mission Overview The BalloonSat “Optimism Prime” shall ascend to an altitude of approximately 30,000 meters in order to measure the intensity of light as a function of altitude, the acceleration of the satellite during the flight, the inside and outside temperatures, and the humidity to better understand the conditions of “near space.” We are doing this project because we are curious of how the sun’s intensity increases as a satellite approaches “near space.”

Design: Parts Foam Core: 0.2904 m 2 Insulation: 0.2904 m 2 2 x HOBO data logger – Voltage measurement cable – Accelerometer – External Temperature Sensor 6 x Photodiode 2 x Solar Panel Digital Camera Cable Heater Batteries (3 x 9V, 2 x 1.5V, 2 x 3V)

Design: Functional Block Diagram

Design: Blueprint

Management

Management: Schedule Design Completion by September 22 nd. Foam core shell shall be built by October 4 th to be ready for Whip, Stair, and drop testing. Order all hardware by October 2 nd with the expectation that they will all be received by October 9 th. Prototype design shall be completed by October 14 th. Final construction of BalloonSat to be built by October 21 st. Final BalloonSat testing, including cold test shall be completed from October 21 st through November 4 th. Conceptual Design Review slides are due September 23 rd. Design Document Review A due October 9 th. Critical Design Review slides are due October 14 th. Design Document Review B is also due October 14 th. Design Document Review C is due November 6 th. Launch Readiness Review slides are due November 11 th. Design Document Review D is due December 2 nd. Final presentation is due December 2 nd as well.

Budget: Weight Maximum Weight: 1000g (I kg) Digital Camera: 220g HOBO data logger: 29 g x 2 = 58 g 9V Battery: 45.6 g x 3 = 136.8 g Foam Core (.2904 m 2 ) = 264.6 g Photodiodes: 0.25 x 6 = 1.5 g Solar Panel (40 cm 2 ) = 2 x 3.36 g = 6.72 g Cords/Cables: Approx. 50 g Heating Unit: 68.4 g Insulation: Approx. 50 g Total: 856.02 g

Budget: Money Photodiodes: 10 x 1.25 = 12.50 Second HOBO data logger: $115.00 Voltage Cord for HOBO: $8.00 Various Cable: $5.00 Estimated Shipping costs: Approx. $10.00 Total: $150.50

Biggest Worries Last minute problems Time schedule – Not enough time to build/test/rebuild/retest/etc. Prof. Koehler’s review of this proposal
