Serving the Military Family World Class Military-Dependent Students: Marching Forward on Two Fronts in PWCS Prince William County Schools received a DoDEA grant that will provide military-dependent students Social/emotional and academic support. Students will receive assistance from tutors, STEM coaches and counselors in a hands- on direct-services approach.

Goal 1Goal 2 Increase the proportion of military- dependent students in each school who participate in social/emotional activities and school connectedness events. Increase the percentage of eligible military-dependent students receiving academic support and enrichment. Goals of Our Grant

The Number of Military-Dependent Students in Each School. Our Target Schools

GOAL 1GOAL 2 Provide social/emotional support activities for military- dependent students at elementary and secondary schools. Provide at least one large scale event geared toward the needs of military- dependent students. Provide professional development for counselors and other mental health staff in area of social/emotional support specific to military- dependent students’ needs. Provide military-dependent students with academically enriched activities related to STEM. Provide professional development for teachers on the use of STEM-related virtual learning resources. Provide assessments, academic needs support to military-dependent students entering after the beginning of the school year to determine needs. To Accomplish Goals Strategies

 This grant will ensure that no military-dependent student at participating schools will be placed on a waiting list to participate in any STEM related after school programs, such as VEX IQ. Military-dependents students will be provided the resources to complete in regional and world tournaments.  The Patriotic Leadership Ambassadors program will be developed by PWCS professional educators that will provide academic as well as social/emotional support for students at the secondary level.  Implementation of Gizmos – A library of interactive online simulations for math and science education for grades 3 – 12. Using this resource as an integrated piece of the curricula allows for more meaningful mathematics, technology and science integration, critical skills all our students will need prior to graduation. Strategies Continued…

 Military dependent student support programs will provide the opportunity for military support coaches and students to participate in a 2-day training during the summer. This training enables students to lead any transitioning student through a school move and the related adjustments to new and uncertain surroundings. The training focuses on social-emotional adjustments, academic success, establishing relationships, community service and leadership development.  These student support programs will be further enhanced by middle and high school students attending Student Success Academy – A week long summer enrichment program that focuses on the development of study skills.
