1. Lanphier High School The Future of Our SIG Efforts

2. Why LHS Sought SIG The staff recognized that its hard work was not reflected in student outcomes that met expectations  Declining test scores  Declining graduation rates  Strong desire to meet the needs of every student attending LHS In 2011, Lanphier was the successful recipient of the SIG 1003 (g) grant.

3. What Did LHS Do? The staff identified areas in need of improvement and developed steps to make those improvements Within the SIG proposal, a three-tiered approach was developed toward making the desired improvements founded on research-based instructional strategies

Success in High School=Good Grades, Good Attendance and Good Behavior Tier I A Solid Core Curriculum Teachers continue to deliver high quality instruction that includes critical thinking, high level questioning, and student engagement in every class  Teachers work together to ensure that all courses at Lanphier are relevant, rigorous and based on high standards  Teachers participate in professional learning to extend their instructional skill sets

5. Success in High School=Good Grades, Good Attendance and Good Behavior Tier II Targeted Services Students will participate in class, complete assignments and take advantage of prescribed academic supports.  Staff designed differentiated instruction based on the assessment of individual student reading levels  Implemented cross-curricular emphasis on literacy skills  Added core curriculum supports during enrichment period

6. Success in High School=Good Grades, Good Attendance and Good Behavior Tier III Intensive Interventions Some students require more intensive services as determined by the building support team.  30-minute literacy/math intervention period  Students can take core classes and elective classes during summer school. Incoming 9 th graders are offered a step-up class to prepare them for the rigors of reading and math in high school  Additional elective classes are provided for students. These classes offer additional support in the areas of literacy and math skills

More of What We Did – Literacy Focus Literacy team analyzed reading scores from standardized tests in August to determine the specific reading skills that students need Literacy team completed a full year calendar that identifies the skills and the amount of time needed for teaching the skills during enrichment period (pre and post tests are administered) Literacy team meets monthly to determine the school progress in teaching and learning of the literacy skills Literacy team introduced a rubric for assessing argumentative writing

What Happened - Results A significant decrease in the number of students failing classes A steady improvement in the number of students passing all core subjects Enrollment has increased and the mobility rate has greatly decreased A large number of students were able obtain additional course credits by attending summer school free of charge Dramatically reduced number of freshmen failures Decrease in the number of out of school suspensions in all grades Incoming freshmen participating in Step Up to High School outperform those not participating

What Needs to Happen Now Sustain the following: Interventions for students developed and monitored through Tiered Academic Team Improved Instructional Strategies –professional development delivered by teachers and administrators through the Instructional Leadership Team Literacy Focus Initiatives developed by Literacy Team with support from professional development delivered by the staff members from the Literacy Team
