Math Summit II Held on August 11 th, 12 th, and 13 th, 2010 at Baker College

Important Concepts from the Math Summit II Thinking Outside the Box Dr. DeMeo Hands On Emotional Impact / Surprise Meaningful Learning Connections to Past Learning Impact on Multiple Learning Styles Trust Dan Meyer Student Involvement in Learning Technology and Sharing With Others Ask Shortest Question Possible Research Based

Math Summit I Overview Collaborative Gathering ( 3 post-secondary institutions, 1 intermediate school district, 12 public school districts, 1 charter school, and 2 private schools) Explored and examined course content at all levels Positive focus on improving education at all levels Networking and sharing of ideas, resources, and expertise Began creating action plans to make improvements happen

Reminder of Goal of Math Summit I Reduce the need for remediation at the post-secondary level by 5% each year following the Summits.

Math Summit I created a need to further our initiatives, so Math Summit II was planned. Goal of Math Summit II Four Groups were developed to help us accomplish our overall goal of reducing remediation.  Parent Education  Elementary Math Specialist  Transition to College  Math Lab Support

Parental involvement and Education Facilitator Garnet Hauger Spring Arbor University

Increase awareness of parents in Jackson County about mathematics education Increase multiple levels of parent involvement Increase availability of resources for families

Recommendations Communicate with parents to increase their understanding of mathematics education Involve parents in the classroom in at least one way each year ( Math Nights, visit classrooms, etc.) Make available to parents and teachers a list of resources for tutoring, reinforcement, and enrichment activities, web sites, etc. (Collaborating with Math Lab Support Group) Provide training for tutors and other resource people and that reflects current teaching practices and curriculum

The members of the Parent Education and Involvement Planning Team will serve as pilot implementers at their respective schools, as well as support for implementation and data collection (and analysis). All recommendations will be implemented during the 2010- 2011 school year, during which the group will maintain communication electronically and meet in early 2011.

Facilitators Kristi Hanby Math and Science Coordinator Jackson County Intermediate School District Jody Rooney Jackson Community College Elementary Math Specialists Building Leaders for Mathematics in our Elementary Schools

To develop teams who are committed to being highly trained math educators and are willing to work with other educators in their building in order to ensure that all students are successful math learners.

This cell group has dedicated itself to taking the initiative back to their building/districts to encourage other teachers/administrators to Utilize professional development opportunities Collaborate in teams Help develop and implement common formative and summative assessment This initiative needs to start now so we don’t lose momentum!!!

Transition to College Making the Change from High School to College Mathematics Facilitator Kristi Laird Department Chair of Mathematics Jackson Community College

Develop and implement workshops for middle and high school students Understanding the College Math Placement Process Increase Likelihood of Placing into College-level Math Class vs. Development Class Differences Between High School and College Bridge Courses 2 Week Long Courses in Early August Skill reinforcement and Re-teaching Teacher and Math Coach Led Differentiated Instruction Could be Computer Based GOAL

A steering committee will develop the content and materials for the workshops Pilot will be planned for the fall of 2010 Full implementation in fall of 2011 College math teachers from Baker, JCC, and SAU will present workshops in the fall to high school math classes Supporting information online for parent use Computer Assisted Preparation Pilot available in November 2010 – Full Implementation In summer 2011 Bridge Courses Available Summer 2012

Math Lab Support Facilitators Maureen Hesslau Middle School at Parkside Baker College, Jackson Teresa Double Jackson High School Baker College, Jackson

Goal For Math Lab Support from Math Summit I Increase student success on standardized assessment and increase student learning within their math courses by providing skill work, more time on task, alternate presentation of materials, more support, and individualized feedback.

This Fall, We Will Explore and Pilot Several Types of Technology to Find Methods to successfully teach, and remediate as needed, concepts and skills required to be successful East Jackson High School Pilot Lab Program Jackson Public Schools/Baker College Grant Possibility Goal 1

In non-technology based labs, this fall we are gathering pre and post testing data from several established math labs to look at levels of success. Establishing a list of tutors from local post- secondary institutions (education/work study) Goal 2

Establishing an online resource for students, staff, and parents – this is done This resource is a moving document. It will be continually updated with resources from all institutions involved http://mathlabsupport.wikispaces.com Math Blog http://groups.google.com/group/jchea-math-summit Goal 3

In the end…. Able to Build Action Plan for each initiative Able to establish a blog for math educators to easily communicate across the county – open the lines of communication Inspired to continue to improve our teaching to another level --- Dr. DeMeo and Dan Meyer Established a means to share technology and online resources ( wiki page ) Developed Teams and Coaches Within Hoping for Support to Reconvene in February
