TRAIN COM Fifth Framework Programme 23 May, 2000 Laboratori Fondazione Guglielmo Marconi 12 Conclusions  Railways in Europe need to take advantage of Information Technology to reach a higher level of competitiveness, safety and quality of service  The European Commission is giving precise guidelines, e. g. Directives for Interoperability  Standards are needed to support the Technical Specifications for Interoperability  Europe wide infrastructures need to be developed to support the new organisation of railway operators, as well as intermodality  Integration of existing and new technologies can enable new models for services (dynamic passenger information, maintenance) as part of a global fleet management system
