6th Framework Programme Thematic Priority Aeronautics and Space

FP6 - Aeronautics Workprogramme l Objectives s To meet society’s needs for a more efficient, safer and environmentally friendly air transport s To win global leadership for European aeronautics with a competitive supply chain, including small and medium size enterprises. l Research Areas s Strengthening the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry in the global market s Improving the environmental impact with regard to emissions and noise s Improving aircraft safety and security s Increasing the operational capacity of the air transport system

FP6 - Aeronautics Workprogramme Approach l Open upstream research to further improve the technology base and develop innovative concepts and breakthrough technologies to pave the way for a step change in aviation. (Primarily Classical Instruments) l Focused downstream research integrating a critical mass of technical fields, activities and resources needed to achieve ambitious objectives. (Preferably New Instruments)

Research Domains : Õ Integrated design and product development Õ Manufacturing Õ Maintenance Õ Aerodynamics Õ Structural weight reduction Õ Equipment weight and power take up reduction Õ Propulsion Õ Crew workload reduction Õ Cabin environment Õ On board passenger services Õ New aircraft concepts and breakthrough technologies Research Objectives : s reduce aircraft development cost by 20% (50%) in the short (long) term s reduce aircraft operating cost by 20% (50%) in the short (long) term s increase passenger choice with regard to travel costs, time to destination, on- board services and comfort Strengthening Competitiveness

Research Domains: Õ Propulsion Õ Aerodynamics Õ Structural weight reduction Õ Equipment weight and power take up reduction Õ Combustion Õ External noise Õ Manufacturing Õ Maintenance Õ New aircraft concepts and breakthrough technologies Research Objectives: s reduce CO 2 by 50% per passenger-km in the long term s reduce NOx by 20% (80%) in the short (long) term s reduce external noise by 4-5 dB (10 dB) per operation in the short (long) term. For rotorcraft, reduce noise footprint area by 50% and external noise by 6 dB (10dB) in the short (long) term s reduce the environmental impact in the manufacturing and maintenance of aircraft and its components Environmental Impact

Research Domains: Õ Human-machine interface Õ Accident prevention Õ Accident survivability Õ Airborne aircraft security Õ New aircraft concepts and breakthrough technologies Research Objectives: s reduce accident rate by 50% (80%) in the short (long) term s reach 100% capability to avoid or recover from human error s mitigate results of survivable accidents s reduce to zero hazards of on-board hostile actions while in flight Safety and Security Safety and Security

Research Domains Research Domains Õ On-board and ground automation aids, Õ Communication, navigation and surveillance systems Õ Flight operation procedures that will enable the introduction of new concepts including the free-flight concept in a future European ATM system Research Objectives : s optimise airspace and airport utilisation, and consequently reduce flight delays, through a seamlessly integrated European air traffic management system, which would facilitate the achievement of the “Single European Sky” initiative. Increasing Operational Capacity of the Air Transport System
