FP6 IST Call 4 SO 2.4.12 eSafety – Co-operative Systems for Road Transport European Commission - DG Information Society and Media Unit C.5: ICT for Transport and the Environment European Commission - DG Information Society and Media Unit C.5: ICT for Transport and the Environment

European RTD programmes have successfully developed and demonstrated ICT systems for Transport. Their advantages Efficiency and effectiveness Safety and environmental friendliness Their mode of operation autonomous or stand-alone Their limitations in costs in performance Present situation

Co-operative Systems Definition: Road operators, infrastructure, vehicles, their drivers and other road users will cooperate to deliver the most efficient, safe, secure and comfortable journey. The vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure co-operative systems will contribute to these objectives beyond the improvements achievable with stand-alone systems. How to overcome these limitations? Use the Concept of Co-operative Systems

Future Co-operative Systems Their potential better quality higher reliability of the information available on vehicles, their location and the road environment Their mode of operation Co-operative, i.e. vehicles communicate with each other and with the infrastructure Their opportunities new, improved users services

Co-operative Systems will enhance the support available to drivers and other road users. They will provide for Greater transport efficiency Greater transport efficiency Making better use of the capacity of the available infrastructureMaking better use of the capacity of the available infrastructure Managing various demandsManaging various demands Increased safety Increased safety Improving the quality and reliability of information used by advanced driver assistance systemsImproving the quality and reliability of information used by advanced driver assistance systems Allowing the implementation of advanced safety applicationsAllowing the implementation of advanced safety applications IST Call 4: Objectives

IST Call 4 Focus – Advanced Concepts Research proposals should focus on: Advanced communication concepts Open interoperable and scalable systems architectures Advanced sensor infrastructure Dependable software Robust positioning technologies to be integrated into Co-operative Systems delivering core functions for Road and vehicle safety Transport efficiency Additionally, activities on: Active safety systems (if contributing to increase the performance of integrated safety systems) might be considered for support.

IST Call 4: Focus - eSafety Proposals in support of the eSafety initiative should focus on Accident causation data analysis Assessment of the potential impact and socio-economic costs and benefits up to 2020 of intelligent safety systems in Europe Actions to sustain the work of the eSafety Forum

IST Call 4 Focus – Support Actions Specific support actions are foreseen for: Supporting international co- operation Training of professionals and users Dissemination Improved participation of SMEs
