  In Egypt British rule had important political and economic effects.  The main interest of the British in Egypt was to keep control of the trade route that ran through Egypt to the Red Sea and then on to India.  Egyptians were also an important market for British industries to sell to. Egypt

  Britain was interested primarily in opening markets for its manufactured goods in West Africa and expanding commerce in palm oil.  Securing the oil and ivory trade required that Britain used the power of coastal chiefs in what became Nigeria.  By 1850 British trading interests were concentrating in Lagos and the Niger River delta. Nigeria

  Britain was the dominating power of empire in Africa in 1905, closely followed by France.  Britain and France signed an agreement called the Entente Cordiale in which Britain agreed not to fight with France over control of Morocco.  As many European countries had an Empire, Morocco was one of the last places not to be taken by a Great power and still remained independent. Morocco

  France, Britain and Italy are, by international agreement, in control of Tunisian finances.  This arrangement is a platform on which three rival colonial powers jockey and trade for position.  In 1878, France and Britain come to a agreement that the British will allow Tunisia to be a French sphere of influence. Tunisia

  The British did not have the force to occupy Sudan. Like in other colonies across Africa, they had to institute the "divide-and-rule" policy in Sudan.  The "divide-and-rule" policy separated southern Sudanese provinces from the rest of the country and slowed down their economic and social development.  Southern Sudan had the "indirect rule" policy. In order to prevent educated urban class and religious leaders from influencing social and political life in southern Sudan, the British gave "power" to the tribal leaders and ruled through them. Sudan
