Romeo & Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play. It tells the story of two young teenagers, who are from two troubled families. Their families hate each other so therefore they are not aloud to date, not even to think of marriage.The families are always fighting and this causes many deaths. In the play Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Lady Montague, Romeo, and Juliet all die because of the hate between the families. This shows that people should just accept others the way they are.

Marty Marty is a tragic comedy. Marty is a little fat Italian man who lives with his mom. All of his siblings are already married and he is the only one left. So he decides to go to the dance hall and he meets a girl. She isn’t the best looking girl in the world but they have a lot in common, so he decides to take her home and his mom meets her. Even though his mom has been waiting for this she is still mad because she doesn’t like her. The play ends with Marty saying he is going to call her and plan a date.

West Side Story West Side Story is based on Romeo and Juliet, except it takes place farther ahead in time. And instead of two families fighting, it is two gangs, the sharks and jet. In it Romeo is actually Tony and Juliet is Maria. The same events take place, but they are changed a little to fit more into the time period.

Drama A drama is a story written to be performed by actors before an audience. In a tragedy, the tragic hero suffers a reversal of fortune. Ex: Romeo and Juliet

Tragedy A play in which a main character, called the tragic hero, suffers a downfall. Ex: Romeo and Juliet, but it unusual because it involves two tragic heroes instead of only one.

Foil Characters A character who provides a strong contrast to another character. The foil character may emphasize a character’s traits or make that character look better by comparison. Ex: Mercutio is Romeo foil character in Romeo and Juliet, because he is wild and crazy, but Romeo is more conservative.

Shakespeare’s Plot The 1 st act is the exposition because it shows how the families are fighting. When the Montagues are on their way to the party is the rising action. When Romeo and Juliet first kiss is the climax. When Romeo is banished from Verona is the falling action. When Romeo and Juliet die to the end of the play is the Resolution.

Monologues, Soliloquies, and Asides Monologue- Lines addressed to other characters. Soliloquy- Line spoken privately by a character alone on stage. Aside- A brief remark that only the audience or another selected character is meant to hear.

Prologue A preliminary discourse; a preface or introductory part of a discourse, poem, or novel. Ex: Page 698 lines 1 through 15.

Chorus A company of singers and dancers. Ex: Page 698 lines 1 through 15.

3 Types of Irony Situational Irony Ex:Situational Irony- When an occurrence is the opposite of what is expected. Ex: When Romeo tried to stop Tybalt and Mercutio’s duel, he actually cause’s Mercutio’s death. Verbal Irony Ex:Verbal Irony- Occurs when a person says one thing and it means another. Ex: When they thought Juliet was crying for Tybalt’s death, but she was really crying for Romeo. Dramatic Irony Ex:Dramatic Irony- When the reader or audience knows something that a character does not know. Ex: Juliet dreams about the future of her and Romeo when the audience knows he has been banished.

Stage Directions Stage RightStage Right- the person in the audience’s left side. Stage LeftStage Left- the person in the audience’s right side. Down StageDown Stage- front of the stage. Up StageUp Stage- back of the stage.

Blank Verse Unrhymed poetry or dramatic verse written in a meter known as iambic pentameter. Ex: Be pa/ tient, for/ the world/ is broad/ and wide.

Allusion A reference to a well-known character, place or situation from history, music, art, or another work of literature. Ex: In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus’s wife uses it in her poem “An Ancient Gesture.”

Oxymoron A figure of speech in which opposite ideas are combined. Ex: Why then, O brawling love, O loving hate.
