Presentation transcript:

Copy the following in your journal: A sentence is the basic unit of language which expresses a complete thought. A sentence fragment fails to be a sentence in the sense that it cannot stand by itself. Now, number your paper 1-5, and write “S” for a complete sentence, and “F” for a sentence fragment. Be able to explain your answer. _________1. Taking a canoe trip in Canada. _________ 2. Sufficient food for a week’s journey. _________ 3. Others had camped there before us. _________ 4. Ashes indicated the place. _________ 5. Where their fire had been

Like yesterday, label each sentence with an “S” or an “F” to determine whether or not it is a complete sentence. If it is a fragment, change it to make it a complete sentence. 1. Climbing on the monkey bars in the park. 2. Pass the ketchup. 3. Plays trombone in the school band. 4. The President made a speech on national television. 5. Jessica made an “A” on her science project. 6. Ran to first base when he hit the ball. 7. The ski boat capsized in the water. 8. After everyone had left the party.

Demonstrative Pronouns Demonstrative pronouns are this, that, these, and those. Like all pronouns, they replace nouns. Demonstrative pronouns are used to replace specific people or things that have been previously mentioned (or are understood from context). 1. _________ is one of the places mentioned in the brochure. 2. _________ are beautiful quilts on the counter. 3. Do you think __________ answer is correct? 4. Would you like one of _________ books to read on your vacation?

Interrogative pronouns are who, whose, whom, which, and what. You use them to ask questions. 1. ______ is the governor of North Carolina? 2. ______ are you going to do this weekend? 3. ______ is the blue house on the corner? 4. ______ subject are you going to pass?

2/5/14 Copy the following definition and then choose the best reflexive pronoun for each practice sentence. Reflexive pronouns are pronouns that refer back to the subject of the sentence or clause. They either end in –self, as in the singular form, or –selves as in the plural form. Examples **If the pronoun is “he,” the reflexive pronoun is himself. He blames himself for making an F on his report card.** Practice 1. The young girl was singing happily to _____________. 2. Benjamin and Franky are proud of _________________ for their performance in the play. 3. I cannot help ____________, but I love Justin Timberlake! 4. We ______________ made these peanut butter cookies.
