The First Political Parties

Opposing Views Washington didn’t want political parties, but his cabinet created them. Secretary of State- Thomas Jefferson Secretary of Treasury- Alexander Hamilton

Federalists  Support Hamilton  Northerners  Wealthy  Businessman/ bankers  Supported strong federal government  upper crust to rule  Supported Britain Democratic Republicans  Support Jefferson  Southerners  Farmers (90 % )  Support stronger state governments  Supported France

Strict vs. Loose Strict construction- (Democratic Republicans) - government can only do exactly what the constitution says. Loose construction- (Federalists) - Unless the constitution strictly forbade it then, the government could do it.

Role of Citizens Federalists- feared people becoming to involved. Wanted leaders to be elite citizens who represented the people. Democratic Republicans- feared a strong central government led by only a few people. Felt democracy would only be safe if all people were involved.

Election of 1796 Federalists - chose John Adams for candidate and Charles Pinckney Democratic Republicans- Thomas Jefferson as candidate and Aaron Burr as VP. Adams and Jefferson once great friends are now bitter rivals. Adams gets 71 electoral votes and Jefferson gets 68 ADAMS WINS!!! Pinckney WINS!!!!!!!

WRONG!!!!!!!!…..sort of At this time two running mates from the same party could not enter office together. Due to this, the presidential candidate from the other party became the VP of the country. So…… Adams wins!!!!!! Jefferson wins!!!!!
