4. Thomas Jefferson Author of the Declaration of Independence Saw a country of self-sufficient farmers Wanted minimal government interference Valued our relationship with the French Democratic-Republican Party

5. Farewell George He was president for 2 four year terms He gave several warnings in his farewell address – No alliances with Europeans – NO political parties – Avoid sectionalism (division according to areas) Did we listen?

6. The first political parties For the election of 1796, Republicans supported Jefferson Federalists supported John Adams Adams wins the presidency and Jefferson is his VP

7. The French Revolution The big question on everyone’s minds was “should we get involved?” Citizen Genet from France comes over to try to get the United States involved Do we owe them anything?

8. An Expanding Nation People began to move west across the Appalachian mountains for cheap land These people were called pioneers Trailblazers like Daniel Boone carved out paths for people to follow along the way

9. Fear of France In 1801 Thomas Jefferson became the third president of the United States In France Napoleon ruled and he had taken over much of Europe Jefferson decided to purchase New Orleans from France to stop them
