Poetry Station #2 Magnetic Poetry Task—In this station you will use an iPad to compose a concrete poem. 1.Pair up with a person in your group. 2.Open up the app “Word Magnets” or “Poetry Creator” 3.Create a concrete poem from the word collage. 4.Spend the majority of the time manipulating the words. Use as many of the words as you can. 5.Write down what you created during the last 5 minutes of the station, even if the phrases seem disjointed or strange. Each partner needs to have a copy of the poem. 6.Don’t forget to title your masterpiece!

You will then write a sequence of 3 haikus about a piece of art you choose. ** Remember that haiku focuses on tiny details – so be sure to include these in your poem. Task—In this station you will listen to music and write what you envisioned. 1.Go to 2.Search for 2 of these 3 options: “Lost Ones by Lauryn Hill” “Ghetto Gospel by Tupac Shakur” “1000 Whispers by Illogic” 3.Listen to each of the songs twice. ** For the first listen, listen with your eyes shut ***For the second listen turn the computer monitor off, listen with your eyes open and write down the images and comparisons that come to mind. 4.Take the ideas from one of the songs and turn your ideas into your own rap song about that artist. 5.Be sure to use allusion, alliteration, rhyme, repetition, metaphor and simile in your rap. Poetry Station #5 From the Greats Task—In this station you will read some great poetry and use it to create some of your own poetry. 1.Select a poetry book and flip through it and find a title or line that interests you. 2.Read the poem and write down what you think the poem is about on your handout. 3.Do this for two poems. 4.On the back of your handout, write your own poem in the same style/form as one of the poems you read. Keeping with the spirit of that poem, adopt the same poetic devices, rhyme scheme and meter that author used in their poem.

Poetry Station #6 Poetry Treasure Map Task—In this station you will create a treasure map of five places that poetry could “hide.” **Think Analogy** 1.Look at my Poetry Treasure Map example. Look at the places I could find poetry. 2.List all of the cool places you could find ideas for poems in your house. 3.On the provided paper, draw your treasure map using images and words. Be sure to color your map. 4.On the back of your map, write a free verse poem about one of the places on your map – from the point of view of an object found in that place. Be sure to include onomatopoeia, sensory imagery, vigorous verbs, symbols and personification in your poem.

Task—In this station you will use the senses "smell, taste, or touch" to stimulate ideas for sensory poetry. 1.Select a bag from the container and using only that sense, describe what it is you feel, smell, or taste. The focus of this activity is not on trying to guess exactly what is in the bag, but on the details of description, along with images you associate with those details. 2.Do this for each bag. 3.Write one cinquain using the details from 3 of the 6 bags.
