Presentation transcript:

Imagine that you woke up and there were no grocery stores, restaurants, or any type of food establishments. What would you do first? How would you look for food? What tools would you use to get food? What would you be willing to eat? Please write at least four sentences telling me your response. Remember that there is no right or wrong answer; this is based on your own opinion. Nothing too gory though…

Mr. Pratt World History I 9/16

 1. Australopithecines (southern apes) - 4 to 5 million years ago  2. Australopithecus Afarensis to 2.5 million years ago. (Lucy) Average: 4 feet tall, 75 pounds. Big: 5 feet tall, 100 lbs.  3. Homo Habilis (handy man, tools) million years ago  4. Homo Erectus (upright man) million years to 300,000 years ago. (Tall and thin, about 6 feet tall.) Tall and thin was good because the body cools more easily and it is easier to run. Spread into Europe and Asia.  5. Homo Sapien (thinking man) - About 300,000 years ago. (first discovered in Germany)  6. Homo Sapien Sapien - About 100,000 years ago. Modern form of humans.

Reasons for Humans Success 1.Stand Erect 2. Superior Brain Capacity 3. Can Remember 4. Can Amass Knowledge and Thus Enhance Survival 5. Invented Tools and Weapons. Reason # 1 Warmer Weather Reason # 2 More Grass Reason # 3 More Plants and Animals

 Where?  Eastern Africa  Modern Homo Sapiens migrated from Africa into Asia, Europe, Australia, and eventually the Americas  When?  Somewhere between 100,000 and 400,000 years ago  Exact Date cannot be known  Why do you think this is ?

 Early Human had to rely on their physical environment to survive  Relied on the availability of wild plants and animals  They were nomadic because of this  What does the term nomadic mean ?  Nomads don’t live in one set location, they move from place to place to find new food sources  In order to survive they had to be able to adapt to their new environments constantly

Back in the old daysToday Had to hunt daily Had to gather wild fruits and oats What if there are no animals to hunt What if there are no wild plants in the area Grocery Stores Restaurants You have to pay for it No money = No food

 Paleolithic Era – Also known as the Old Stone Age  “Paleo” means old and “Lithic” means stone  Humans lived as Hunter-Gatherers during this time  What does Hunter-Gatherer mean?  Had to find daily sources of food  They were nomadic ( moved around searching for food and water )  Lived in tribes or clans ( no organized cities or villages )

 They started to develop (oral) spoken language  They create “cave art”  Discovered fire and learned how to use it  Developed simple tools and weapons (most were crudely made of stone)

 Neolithic Era – Known as the New Stone Age  “Neo” means new and “Lithic” mean what?  During this time humans started to develop permanent communities and settlements

 AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION ( Started Farming )  Humans start planting crops into the ground  At the same time humans begin to domesticate animals  Pottery wheel was invented and people began using pottery  Humans began to weave their own cloth instead of using animal hides  Humans began creating more advanced tools ( such as axes, knives, wheels, flints, and hoes )

 Humans begin to settle in one place and become much less nomadic  Villages and Towns begin to form  Humans begin to start developing more advanced and complex societies  Division of labor (people get certain jobs in settlements  Written language develops as trade develops among towns and villages  Social Classes begin to emerge

PaleolithicNeolithic TimeOld stone Age 2 mil years ago – ago (8,000BC) New Stone Age (8000BC-2500BC) LifestyleTribes or Clans, Nomadic, Hunter-Gatherers, Permanent Settlements (Towns and Villages), Farming, Domesticate, Tools/ weapons Simple Stone Tools (Bone and Wood used) More advanced, use of metal, more specialized OtherBegin to bury dead (religious/afterlife), Growth in population, ShelterCaves, any shelter that is naturally there Simple stone/mud homes, many dug into the ground MaterialsAnything found in nature (stone/wood/bone) Start to use metal, clay, seeds Invention/ Innovations Fire, cave art, simple tools/weapons, spoken language Pottery wheel, written language, metal tools and weapons, ovens, calendar, advanced farming tools

 Which of the following accomplishments do you think humans first acquired? A. Ability to Make Tools B. Ability to Farm C. Ability to Make clothing D. Spoken Language E. Invention of the Wheel *Please write the questions and only your answer… write out your answer, not just the letter
