Essential question: How did physical geography influence the lives of early humans? 2. Essential knowledge: Homo sapiens emerged in East Africa between and 400,000 years ago. Homo sapiens migrated from Africa to Eurasia, Australia and the Americas. Early humans were hunter-gatherers whose survival depended on the availability of wild plants and animals.

15 Nomads Hunter-gatherers were nomadic, migrated or moved from place to place in search of food, water and shelter. Discussion Question: Why couldn’t they just stay in one place?

Characteristics of hunter-gatherer societies of the Paleolithic Era: Made clothing from animal skins. Invented the first tools/weapons made of stone (hand ax). Developed oral language to communicate.

Characteristics of hunter-gatherer societies of the Paleolithic Era: Learned to make and use fire for cooking, warmth and protection. Created cave art in France and Spain, as well as Africa and Australia. Believed played a part in religious practices. Showed higher level thinking skills. Lived in groups of up to 50 ruled by the elders or the powerful. Lived in caves or shelters made of animal skins
