Volunteering in Somerset Kelly Podbury, presented by Emily Taylor

Volunteering in Somerset  Firstly apologies for not being able to attend today  Thank you to Emily Taylor for stepping in to present  Thank you for coming and showing your support

Volunteering in Somerset  Somerset has over 30 clubs from three disciplines  All are staffed by volunteers in many different roles, which doesn’t come as a surprise  But we always struggle to get enough volunteers coming forward  I’m sure this is the same across all clubs  What can we do about this?  Can Somerset A.S.A. help?

What roles do your volunteers do within your club?  Committee  Team Manager  Coach  Teacher  Officials  Catering for events  Front of house  Recorders / Announcers  Marketing/PR

Volunteering Roles in Somerset  I’d like to get an understanding of all the roles our volunteers do in Somerset  In one or two groups can you spend 5 minutes just listing all the jobs they do for you in your clubs

Resources & Volunteering News  Do you know what resources are available to your volunteers?  Good Club guides are on the A.S.A. website  Do you receive the Volunteering News?  Sign up for it on the A.S.A. website  Do you visit the Volunteering page on the A.S.A. website? 

Your ideas please……  Encourage – how can we encourage more to volunteer?  Enthuse – how can we excite them about volunteering?  Retain – how can we keep them volunteering?  Reward & Recognise – do we do this well enough in Somerset, if not what can we do better?

How do we?  In two or three groups can you help with the four questions on the previous slide?  Please spend 5 minutes and note down how you think we can encourage, enthuse, retain and reward/recognise our volunteers

Young Volunteering in Somerset  I was really pleased with the number of applications this year for the YV programme  27 applications with 25 being accepted from 8 clubs  The two who were not accepted were just a little bit too young and I have asked them to re-apply next year  Two training days will be organised, the first on either the 9 th or 16 th January – Aquatic Helpers Award  Followed by Timekeepers qualification

Young Volunteering in Somerset  All YV’s will receive a Polo shirt to wear at events & a log book  All will be invited to the Regional training day in September  All will receive certificates from the Region & Somerset

How you can help our Young Volunteers  me any event dates where you would like help and I will to all YV’s and their club mentors  I would like to try and encourage our YV’s to step over the discipline barrier, can you help?  Send me details of training nights where you could spend time with a YV and I will send them the details  If you hear of events or awards please don’t assume I am aware, send me the details

To summarise  I would like a better understanding of all the roles our volunteers do, thank you for taking the time today  How we can support the recruitment, retention & recognition, thank you for your feedback today  How can we develop our Young Volunteers – send me ideas  I want to get the news out there as to how great volunteering is and where information can be found

Thank you  Thank you for your time today  I will review your feedback and take recommendations to the next committee meeting  Then I will update all clubs on the outcomes from today  Thank you
