1 Classroom Newsletter May 7, 2018
Mrs. Burrell’s Class Classroom Newsletter May 7, 2018 Burrell’s Bits I want to thank parents who have already attended their child’s IEP meeting. I know we all have busy lives and meetings make our days longer, but having that together time to look at your child’s progress is important. I’m really going to miss this group of 5th graders next year. I have thoroughly enjoyed having each and everyone of them as part of my classroom family. I am looking forward to just a few more meetings and my IEP season will come to an end. June 4th has been scheduled as a makeup day for January 17th. Schools were closed due to snow and ice. Each year the district has three additional days built into the school calendar for potential makeup days. June 4th was originally scheduled as a teacher workday. Please put this makeup day on your calendar. We are working hard on Text Dependent Analysis (TDA) in class. Your child should be practicing this when they are writing in their Reading Notebook. If they write about a favorite part or favorite character, they should be citing evidence from the text as to why that was their favorite part or why that character is their favorite. They know that any text that they copy, must be in quotation marks because these words were written by someone else. Please encourage your child to use Text Dependent Analysis in their Reading Notebook at least twice during the week. This will help prepare them for our State Testing. If you have any questions about TDA, please send in a note or get in touch with me. If your child doesn’t have his or her own Library Card, I encourage you to take them to your local Spartanburg County Library Branch and get them one. You will need to have your ID and proof of residence. Please see my contact information below. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns. I will get in touch with you as soon as possible. We are a team and we need to work together in order for your child to be the best student they can be. Dates to Remember May 17th SC READY Math May 18th SC READY Social Studies Test May 23rd SC READY ELA Day 1 May 24th SC READY ELA Day 2 May 25th Field Day May 31st 5th Grade Awards Day What We’re Learning This Week Math: We are continuing to test daily our multiplication facts. One group is working on long division. Another group is working on geometry skills. We are locating and identifying coordinate points on a grid. ELA: Students are working on finding evidence for their answers in the text. They should remember to start their answer with part of the question. They must identify where the text is and then explain it in their own words. Students should be writing longer, more detailed sentences in their Reading Notebooks. Other Information Here This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. I enjoy my job each and every day. Yes, there are times when things can be very frustrating-IEP meetings, testing, Faculty Meetings, lesson plans, technology issues, no internet connection, fire drills, intruder drills, meetings at the DO, not enough hours in the day, weather, etc. Just know that through all those things and more, I still enjoy working with your child each and every day. We work hard in our classroom and I expect your child to do his/her part each and every day. We work hard to help your child be the best that he/she can be. Thanks for all you do that helps your child as well. Please make sure your child is getting enough sleep. We have had some tired students this past week. We will make sure that everyone has had breakfast before our day begins. If your child doesn’t return homework (including Home Note and Reading Log signed) or finish classwork, they will need to complete it before they can have Friday Fun. Please send in a daily snack for your child. We go to lunch at 12:05 and that is a long time between breakfast and lunch. Friendly reminder about snacks: Please do not send in any sweets for snack-they are not appropriate. Peanut butter crackers, pretzels, fruit, nuts, cheese, or popcorn all great ideas for healthy snacks. Please make sure your child is wearing tennis shoes on the days they go to PE. Please see our daily schedule on the front page. We go to PE twice each week. Classroom Inspiration “When you can’t control what’s happening, challenge yourself to control the way you respond to what’s happening. That’s where your power is!” Unknown
