1 Leigh CE Primary School
Parent Workshop Building a culture of reading for pleasure at Leigh CE Primary School

2 In our school we love reading.
Every single adult and child who can read, does read. All of our children read at home. This is what Leigh CE want to achieve this year. Idea: You could replace these pictures with your people in your own community reading.

3 To build a culture of reading for pleasure in our school we will:
(The following slides are suggestions based on our experiences in MyBb schools. Please delete slides as appropriate and create your own. We would love to hear what other things you will do – please

4 To build a culture of reading for pleasure in our school we will:
have a daily storytime in KS2. Teachers will read high quality fiction to their children every day. This will expose them to rich and powerful language and encourage children to try new books at home. Storytimes will be on class timetables – the slots will not be at the end of the day as we find this time is easily eaten to. Class teachers would love volunteers to come in and read to the children too – please contact your class teacher if you are interested.

5 To build a culture of reading for pleasure in our school we will:
promote a love of books. We will have a weekly reading assembly. In our reading assemblies we will: introduce the children to the new books learn about key events and school themes through books invite authors in to speak to the children ask children to share their favourite books. Reading displays around the school will be prominent. Every class will have a display in their classroom. Look out for reading related news in the newsletter.

6 To build a culture of reading for pleasure we will:
buy lots of fantastic new books for the school MyBB. The library will be stocked with all types of books – popular new fiction, award winning titles, classics, myths and legends. We are buying books that feature on the MyBookBlog reading list, a new reading for pleasure website that I’m going to show you in a minute. We’ll be setting up lots of fundraising events over the school year and would love your support. Books will have a sticker on the cover so that you know they need to be really looked after and returned to school. Books are be organised in alphabetical order to mirror bookshops and libraries. Children will be able to get new books to read at home from the school library/from their book corners.

7 To build a culture of reading for pleasure we will:
support children on their journey through books using new, exciting technology. Every class will have a chance to access our new online resource, MyBB. The website supports children on their journey through real books, supporting them to grow their vocabulary, blog about books and explore related non fiction. There will also be after school clubs and lunchtime library clubs for children to access the site in school out of their designated slot.

8 Say: Let me show you how MyBookBlog works.
(Plan your demo to include: How to search for books in ‘Find Books’ Explain that ‘Wish List’ is for books the children want to read but might not be able to find copies of – these would be good to get from libraries. Children add books to their bookshelves if they want to read them. To begin with the teachers might be recommending books. The book overview page – watch some trailers for books you know children will read this term Pick a simple book to demonstrate how to complete one chapter – good demo books are Tiddler, Kasia’s Surprise, Young Drac and Nessie the Mannerless Monster. If you’d like to run through this before hand you can later remove it from your shelf so that when you do the demo it is as for the first time. Show how developed the facts get for other books like Percy Jackson and Eagle of the Ninth.

9 There are some other things to know…
Books have a Challenge Guidance. Your child is given a Challenge Guidance by MyBB, which their teacher confirms. This guides them towards a book that is right for them. We suggest children don’t read above their Challenge Guidance but can read anything below.

10 We are going to be using MyBB
As our home reading programme To study the Literacy and Language Linked texts As part of our teacher led storytimes with the teachers also completing their own MyBB

11 reading to your older children.
You can help at home by… reading to your older children. Older children benefit massively from being read to. Not only do they see how much you like reading but they also pick up on the way you say things and they can stop to ask you questions. You can read books in your own language if you are not confident. Children can understand a lot more when they listen to a story compared to when they read one on their own. Reading aloud is a great way to grow their vocabulary.

12 taking your children to the library.
You can help at home by… taking your children to the library. There will be lots of books in your child’s wish list that they won’t necessarily be able to read at school (some books are very popular and everyone wants to read them). Take them along to their local library and let them borrow a few from their wishlist. Remember to be positive about everything they want to read – you might think that some of the books are babyish but they will eventually move onto something harder – the important thing is that they want to read – anything is good! If you do really want them to have a go at something harder (as long as it is within their Challenge Guidance), read a more challenging book together – a few chapters each night. They can complete the activities on MyBB on their own.

13 asking what they are up to on MyBB.
You can help at home by… asking what they are up to on MyBB. Say: Each week MyBB sends parents an telling them the books their child has read, the facts they’ve read and the words they’ve collected. There’s also a question to discuss. Please take a look.

14 Depending on whether children are with their parents you could now let children show their parents their profile.
