China Geography China is in Asia The Huang He (Yellow River) flows across China to the Pacific Ocean It picks up yellow dirt as it crosses and the water turns yellow Huang He flooded every year leaving fertile soil behind Farmers could grow large amounts of food on small farms

Only about one-tenth of China can be farmed The rest of the land is : – mountains (Himalayas, Kunlun Shan, and Tian Shun) – Desert (Gobi) – Plateau (high, flat land)

The mountains and deserts closed off China to the rest of the world, separating them from other people The mountains and deserts helped shape Chinese history Anyang was China’s first capital under the Shang Dynasty

Mongolia India China

Shang Dynasty Built the first capital—Anyang A dynasty is a line of rulers from the same family People were divided into three groups  The king and his family  The warlords and aristocrats  Farmers (few were artisans and traders)

Aristocrats are nobles whose wealth came from the land they owned Warlords are military leaders who command their own armies They passed their land and power to the next generation

Chinese Language Pictographs—characters that stand for objects Ideographs—they join two or more pictographs together to represent an idea The earliest Chinese writing is found on oracle bones (animal bones)

Zhou Dynasty The Shang Dynasty had a huge gap between the rich and poor The kings treated people badly, and they rebelled to form a new dynasty Zhou kings were similar to Shang rulers The Zhou had a bureaucracy—made up of appointed officials who are responsible for different areas of the government.

Religion The Chinese believed the king was their link between heaven and earth The king’s job was to carry out religious rituals This led the way for a new kind of government Mandate of Heaven—the king was chosen for his talent and virtue

Under the Mandate of Heaven the people expected two things: – 1. The king would rule the proper way—called Dao His duty was to keep the gods happy – 2. It gave the people and the king important rights

Bellringer Identify two facts about the Shang Dynasty. 2.Identify two facts about the Zhou Dynasty 3.Identify two facts about the Qin Dynasty
