3 Early China Chinese culture begins to develop around 1500 B.C. Early China depended on river valleys for agriculture. The Great Wall is a line of defense to keep out invaders from the north. – The invaders were a nomadic people who fought on horseback in search of new land. Around 250 B.C., a system of many walls was hastily built to keep out invaders by Qin Shi Haungdi. Increased taxes fund the project. – Upsets people of China The wall was continuously added to over thousands of years thereafter.
