Characteristic features of the State (….contd.): Limitations/Drawbacks Fragile Soil in hilly areas susceptible to soil erosion; Limits to mechanized farming and irrigability of cultivated land; Drought prone areas in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Udhampur & Reasi districts; Single Cropping season of Kharif in temperate / high altitude areas of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh regions; Inadequate and unorganized marketing & limits to transportation of products; Distant markets for export outside the State

Characteristic features of the State (….contd.): Speciality Crops of Kharif Season Saffron: Grown in Kashmir and Kishtwar District of Jammu Division Special Tasting and Aromatic Basmati Rice grown in R.S.Pura area of Jammu division; Special tasting Rajmash; grown in hill districts of Jammu division Black Zeera; Grown in the remotest areas of the State High quality virus free Potato Seed; Produced in Temperate areas of the State Off season quality Peas and vegetables: Grown in Temperate areas of the State

Rabi Assessment Only the Certified and Foundation Category of Yellow Rust resistant Varieties of Wheat Seed Provided to farmers; Advance Stocking of Adequate for distribution on 50% subsidy; Pest monitoring and surveillance teams put in place; Plant Protection Sprays undertaken in the affected area and the surroundings just on initial appearance of disease symptoms; Awareness campaign through Print and electronic media, Farmers’ field Schools, Training Programmes, etc. on a large scale; Disease completely under control; Crop Condition satisfactory especially due to good rains

Kharif Strategy – 2013 To gradually increase area under paddy by specially improving water use efficiency in canal head areas through lining of field channels and adoption of micro-irrigation systems; To increase Basmati area from 37,500 hectares to 42,500 hectares; Increased Production of Basmati rice seed of indigenous varieties; Hybrid rice area to increase from 6500 hectares to hectares; Restricting area under Maize to 308 thousand hectares and promoting use of hybrid seeds for high productivity from hectares to hectares;

Kharif Strategy – 2013 Continued efforts to increase productivity of oilseeds, pulses, vegetables by application of improved technology and inputs, Widening scope of rajmash project; Increased area coverage under fodder from 17.5 th. Hect. To 19.5 Th. Hect. Emphasis on promoting use of Organic inputs and practices especially in paddy, rajmash, saffron and vegetable crops;

Residual moisture in soils from heavy Rains & Snowfall in Feb. will benefit crops sown in the summer and early kharif; Timely sowing of maize, paddy, pulses, fodder being encouraged & facilitated; Focused attention to Timely arrangements and easy access of quality inputs & services to farmers; Continued efforts for Soil & Water Management through RKVY, NMMI, and other Schemes; Augmenting Seed Storage Capacity; Gearing up Extension Network & Capacity building of Farmersl Further Strengthening of Diversified cropping system; Augmenting credit through KCCs (3,36, 093 cards issued; target of 100% coverage of farmers by March 2013). National Saffron Mission (NSM) Rejuvenation in 1292 hectare area Public nurseries established at Allowpora and KD/SRSS Konibal over an area of 38 hectares; Vermi-compost,Weeders,Trainings,etc provided; 130 research trials conducted by SKUAST Kashmir in non-traditional areas; Site identified at Pampore for setting up of Quality Control Lab and Spice Park;

Procurement of Wheat grains/Paddy: The State is now an emerging food grains procurement State 3. Mushroom cultivation: Mushroom cultivation is emerging as a significant agro-based cottage industry in the State. After the popularity of white button mushrooms and paddy straw mushrooms, milky mushroom are also gaining popularity thereby facilitating round-the-year production
