3 West Bengal Agriculture : Challenges--- Historical & Environmental West Bengal Agriculture : Challenges--- Historical & Environmental Has 8% of India’s population with 2.7% of the total area, Population Density (1029 per Sq. Km) puts tremendous pressure on land, Marginal and small farmers constitute about 96% of the total farmers, (2010-11 census) As on 2012-13,a bout 91.74% of the Cultivable Area of the State is under cultivation against a National average of 72.69%. 75-80% of Total rainfall received during 04 rainy months. 75-80% of Total rainfall received during 04 rainy months. 6 Risk in Agril. Production for aberrant Weather Situation Weather aspect Recent Observations On-set of MonsoonDelayed by 5 to 8 days in most of the year Monsoon behaviour 1. Un-even distribution of Rainfall 2. Longer duration of intermittent dry spell 3. Heavy Rainfall in small pockets 4. No. of depression / low pressure system decreasing 5. More Rainfall in later part of Monsoon 6. Often delay in Monsoon withdrawal Winter 1. Temperature Rise 2. Frequent warm spell during the season 3.Length of Winter shorten by 15 days 4.More no. of cloudy days Pre-Monsoon1.No. of Nor’Wester is decreasing

7 Challenges &Strategic Actions Challenges: Besides productivity, farmer’s choice of new varieties depends on taste, marketability etc of the variety & accordingly, extension & acceptability of new varieties under D/C of all the crops faces challenge. Besides productivity, farmer’s choice of new varieties depends on taste, marketability etc of the variety & accordingly, extension & acceptability of new varieties under D/C of all the crops faces challenge. About 75 % of total Pulse area & 70.5 % of total Oilseed area of the State is occupied during Rabi season only, Due to challenged winter & aberated rainfall as well as late withdrawal of monsoon during Kharif season, forcing late sowing of Rabi crops, there is challenge of varietal choice of Pulse and Oilseed crops & their production. Performance of new Pulse & Oilseed varieties( of <10 Years Old) in newer potential areas with challenged soil & climatic condition is also a problem, Farmers used to grow Pulse & Oilseed in marginal land & emphasis on exhaustive use of improved agricultural technologies in Pulse & Oilseed fields of farmers is a missing one.

8 Challenges &Strategic Actions Strategies: Introduction of popular Pulse & Oilseed varieties( may be > 10 Years Old) in newer potential areas, Emphasis on exhaustive use of improved agricultural technologies in Pulse & Oilseed field of farmers & exhaustive training of farmers through D/Cs. Targeting a total of 10% rain-fed Rice-Fallow for Lathyrus, Lentil, Toria, Mustard. Due to challenged Monsoon, introduction of Urd, Green gram, groundnut & Sesame in scanty rainfall areas of medium & high land situation with an aim of better crop diversification programme. Stress on farmer’s acceptability of newly released varieties of all the crops including the marketability, taste, consumer’s choice etc.
