The Distributive Property Day 2

 So yesterday we learned about partial products.  Those are when you split up a two digit number into ones and tens, multiply, and then add the products together.  The distributive property allows you to multiply a sum by a number.  The distributive property and partial products work together! Let’s look back

So today, we’re going to use the distributive property to solve problems like we did yesterday! For a field trip, 42 students each paid $3 for bus transportation. How much money was spent in all for bus transportation? My problem would look like this: 3 x ( ) This is what we did yesterday. Break up 42 into tens and ones.

Now how will we solve it? 3X ( ) We are going to distribute the 3 to both numbers in the parenthesis. Do this with me in your notebook! ( 3 X 40 ) + ( 3 x 2 ) Now multiply what is in each parenthesis. ( 3 X 40 ) + ( 3 x 2 ) =126

So then the answer to the problem: For a field trip, 42 students each paid $3 for bus transportation. How much money was spent in all for bus transportation? $126 was the total collected for the bus transportation!

Let’s try another. Find the product of 7 x 26 using the distributive property. 7 x 26 =7 x ( ) Start by breaking up the 26 Now let’s distribute the 7 to both of the numbers in the parenthesis. = ( 7 x 20 ) + ( 7 x 6 ) Now multiply each set. = = 182 Add the partial products!

Try some on your own! 6X 13 = 12X 8 = 19 X 9 = I want to see work in your notebook!

TT he distributive property lets us multiply a sum by a number WW e need to make sure that we are distributing the number outside the parenthesis to both numbers in the parenthesis MM ake sure to add your partial products at the end! Let’s RE-

BONUS!!! Here is a bonus question. If you would like, you may try it. If you attempt the problem, you will receive a prize. If you attempt AND get the problem correct, you will receive a double prize! Use the distributive property to solve: 9 x 874 = Good luck!
