1 Math I can create equivalent expressions. Using the Distributive Property

Vocabulary Distributive Property: To multiply a sum or difference by a number, multiply each number in the addition or subtraction problem by the number outside of the parentheses. a(b + c) = ab + ac a(b - c) = ab – ac 3(2 + 6) = 3(2) + 3(6) 6(7 – 4) = 6(7) – 6(4) 2

3 How to use the Distributive Property to create an equivalent expression… Example: 6(3x + 6) Step 1: Multiply the number outside the parenthesis to each number inside the parenthesis. 6 ∙ 3x + 6 ∙ 6 ----- This is your equivalent expression, now evaluate. Step 2: Add the two products. 18x + 36  This is your answer, you can’t add them together because they are NOT like terms

Using a model 6(3x + 6) 3x 6 4 18x36 6 Your Answer: 18x + 36

5 Foldable Examples 1. 4(2x – 3) 2. 3(x + 4)

4. -2(4a + 1) 5. -5(4x – 3 + 9y) 6. (2x + 5)7 7. 2(7 + 3d) 6

7 Use the distributive property to write an equivalent expression 8. 2(7 – 3d) 9. (6m +1)3 10. -3(5t – 2) 11. 7(b – 3)

12. 2(t – 5) 13. 3(2.2h – 1.5) 14. (v - 3)4 15. -2(7z + 3) 8
