1 Distributive Property
UNIT 1 Chapter 3-1 Distributive Property

2 Vocabulary: The expression 2(4+5) and 2 • 4+ 2•5 are equivalent expressions because they both equal 18. The Distributive Property combines addition and multiplication. The Distributive Property means to multiply the number outside the parenthesis with each number inside the parenthesis. Then, simplify or solve. *Distributive Property means to multiply. One easy way to remember distributive property is to think about “rainbowing”- “Rainbow” or multiply the outside number with each number inside the parenthesis

3 Examples Use Distributive Property to evaluate: Ex.1) 4 (4+8) = 4 (4 +8) (Multiply the number outside with each number inside the parenthesis) = 4 • • 8 (Simplify) = (Add) = 48

4 Examples Use Distributive Property to evaluate: Ex. 2) (3+4) 2 = (3+4) 2 (Multiply the number outside with each number inside the parenthesis) = 2 • • 3 (Simplify) = (Add) = 14

5 Use Distributive Property to evaluate each algebraic expression: Ex
Use Distributive Property to evaluate each algebraic expression: Ex. 1) 3 (X+2) = 3 (X+2) (Distribute-multiply 3 with each number inside the parenthesis) = 3 •X +3 •2 (simplify) = 3X + 6 Ex. 2) -2(X-4) = -2(X - 4) (Distribute. Multiply -2 with each number inside the parenthesis) = -2 • (X) + (-2) (-4) = 2X + 8 (Remember that two negatives become a positive) = 2X + 8

6 Let’s Try Some Examples
Use Distributive Property: Ex 1) 4(5+6) Ex 2) 6 (X – 4) Ex 3) 7 (X +8) Ex 4) -2( X – 3)

7 Let’s Check Our Answers
Use Distributive Property: Ex 1) 4(5+6) = = 44 Ex 2) 6(X – 4) = 6X - 24 Ex 3) 7(X +8) = 7X + 56 Ex 4) -2( X – 3) = -2X + 6
