ABC’s of Second Grade Homework policy Agendas Classroom discipline Plan Field trips Special Area classes 2 nd Grade Curriculum

A: Attendance School begins at 7:45. Please have your student to school on time EVERY day. School ends at 2:45. If there are ever any changes to end of day departure please send me a note in your child’s agenda or call the office- please do not send an at the end of the day.

B: Behavior/Love and Logic Every day is a new day, so daily behavior is important. Your child’s teacher has communicated behavior expectations with you. Please note your students behavior in their agenda. Initial your students agenda so we know you checked it.

B: Behavior/Love and Logic This year Dilworth is adopting the Love and Logic approach. The Love and Logic process includes, “sharing control and decision-making, using empathy with consequences, and enhancing the self concept of children” The Dilworth staff will be learning and implementing the Love and Logic approach throughout the school year. There will be parent classes available as well so stay tuned!

C: Communication Daily communication will be communicated through your student’s agenda. Weekly communication will be sent home in Wednesday folders. We will try and send out s to update you of any last minute items.

F: Field Trips Children’s Theater on December 2 nd. We will be planning one other field trip in the spring. On days of field trips please have students: Wear the Dilworth SPARK shirt and bring a sack lunch.

G: Grading Scale 3 Meets expectations A (90-100) B (80-89) 2 Inconsistently meets expectations C (70-79) D (60-69) 1 Does not meet expectations at this time F (60 and below)

H: Homework Second grade homework will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, September 9 th. A letter outlining each classroom’s specific homework expectations will be in your Wednesday folder. Please contact your child’s teacher for any questions.

K: Key to good character Please sign up through the PTA if you would like to volunteer to teach Character Ed lessons. Lessons need to be minutes. If you volunteer there will be a training to be announced. YOU will be teaching the lesson and carrying out the activity.

Go over addition and subtraction facts to 20 at home. Keep a set in the car, they can say them as you run errands or go on a trip. Encourage students to explain on their own how they found the answer to a story problem. Have students work the problem and recheck their answer when they are done. Problem solving strategies: Draw a picture Work backwards Create a diagram Make a table Use manipulative (100’s chart, cubes, buttons, coins, etc.) Use a number line

N: Neat handwriting and work completion If students do not complete class work, it will be sent home and will need to be completed as Homework. Please encourage your students to stay focused and complete all tasks on time.

R: Reading Reading logs- students are expected to read for 20 minutes every night. Please make sure your student is recording his or her nightly reading. Second grade follows the reading workshop model. All second graders will remain in their classrooms for reading workshop time.

Read, read, read! Rereading a favorite book is encouraging. It will help with fluency and enhance comprehension. As students are reading have them stop and summarize the story in their own words. Allow students to read a story and respond to it through journal writing, a book report or discussion with an adult. Use sticky notes to record thinking while reading Allow students to choose their own books to read by taking them to the county library. Scholastic Book Wizard app – finding “just right” books
