Energy Flow Page 65 of INB
Essential Question: How does energy flow in an ecosystem?
Energy flow: When 1 organism eats another, the energy from the 1 eaten is transferred to the one eating. Organisms are classified by how they get their energy.
Producers: Producers: produce (make) their own energy. They change the energy available in the environment into food. Photosynthesis or chemosynthesis Light energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water Sugar + Oxygen
Consumers: Can not make their own energy must consume/eat another organism Classified by what they eat.
Consumers: Herbivores: eat only producers/plants Omnivores: eat both producers and consumers Carnivores: eat only consumers Detrivores: eat dead plant and animal material.
Food Chain: Food Chain How energy flows in an ecosystem through feeding relationships. Energy is lost along each step in the food chain
Food Web: Show several interconnecting food chains. Energy pyramid: Food energy available at each level of a community or trophic level.
