1 Pass the Energy Activity

2 Living Organisms Have Jobs!

3 A producer is a plant that makes its own food:
Plants go through photosynthesis to make their own food. They must have sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide in order to make the food (sugar or glucose). CO2 CO2 CO2

4 A consumer that eats a producer:
Is called a primary consumer or a first order consumer May be a herbivore or a omnivore

5 A consumer that eats another consumer for energy:
Is called a secondary or second order consumer May be a carnivore or an omnivore

6 Consumers that hunt & kill other consumers are called predators
Consumers that hunt & kill other consumers are called predators. The animals that are hunted & killed are called prey.

7 Consumers that eat other consumers that have already died are called scavengers.

8 All of these members of an ecosystem interact in certain ways
All of these members of an ecosystem interact in certain ways. When an animal gets eaten, it gives the animal that ate it energy. The transfer of energy in an ecosystem is shown in the ENERGY PYRAMID.

9 All energy in a food web, food chain, and energy pyramid comes from the…

11 Pass the Energy Activity
Think about it… Why is the Energy pyramid shaped the way it is? Pass the Energy Activity

12 Pass the Energy Activity
Round 1 - Inverted 3rd level Consumers 2nd level Consumers Did the top level consumers get enough to eat? Would this type of ecosystem work? 1st level Consumers Producers

13 Pass the Energy Activity
Round 2 - Square Did the top level consumers get enough to eat? Would this type of ecosystem work? 3rd level Consumers 2nd level Consumers 1st level Consumers Producers

14 Pass the Energy Activity
Round 2 - Balanced Did the top level consumers get enough to eat? Would this type of ecosystem work? Why do we call this a “balanced” ecosystem? 3rd level Consumers 2nd level Consumers 1st level Consumers Producers

15 Energy pyramids show That the amount of available energy decreases down the food chain It takes a large number of producers to support a small number of primary consumers It takes a large number of primary consumers to support a small number of secondary consumers

16 The transfer of energy from sun to producer to primary consumer to secondary consumer to tertiary consumer can be shown in a FOOD CHAIN.

17 Food Webs: Are interconnected food chains
They show the feeding relationships in an ecosystem
