1 Matter and Energy in the Environment
Chapter 20

2 Lesson 1: Abiotic Factors
Abiotic means nonliving. The abiotic factors would be the nonliving parts of the environment.

3 Ecosystems Include all of the abiotic (nonliving) factors and Biotic (Living) factors in an area. An ecosystem could be a pond, forest, or field. All organisms need both the abiotic and biotic factors to survive.

4 Lesson 3: Energy in ecosystems
Energy flows through ecosystems from producers to consumers.

5 How does energy move in ecosystems?
Energy moves in a flow pattern. Matter such as water, moves cyclic pattern

6 Producers are organisms that get energy from sunlight; they make their own food by photosynthesis

7 Consumers obtain their energy by eating (consuming) other organisms
herbivores carnivores omnivores Eat only producers Eat other animals Eat producers and animals

8 Modeling energy in ecosystems
Food chain: shows how energy flows in an ecosystem through feeding relationships.

9 Modeling energy in ecosystems
Food web: shows how food chains in a community are interconnected.

10 An energy pyramid shows the amount of energy available in each step of a food chain.
Energy is lost at each trophic level
