Contributions of Instructional Technology to the Learning Process

Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) Comenius' major contribution to instructional technology was his instructional method - used in science to analyze and improve the instructional process. He is considered the first true forerunner of instructional technology. Saettler states:

Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) ..[Comenius] laid the foundation of a systematic understanding of the teaching-learning process and anticipated, to a remarkable extent, the modern concept of instructional technology as applied science in support of the practical arts.

Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) Unfortunately, Comenius' principles of instructional method was lost until the mid 19th century. Since found, many of his ideas have been incorperated into the methods instructional technologists use today.

There are many instructional technologies that can support learning There are many instructional technologies that can support learning. We’ll also be describing the reasons why the appropriate application of instructional media can provide significant improvements over traditional modes of educational delivery.

The content of topic can be more carefully selected and organized. The delivery of instruction can be more standardized. Instruction can be more interesting. The attention-getting factor associated with instructional media keeps learner alert during the learning process.

4. Learning becomes more interactive through applying accepted learning theory. 5. The length of time required for instruction can be reduced. 6. The quality of learning can be improved.

7. Instruction can be provided when or where desired or necessary 7. Instruction can be provided when or where desired or necessary. Instructional media can be designed for individual use. In this manner, a student can study at a time and in place that is personally convenient. 8. The learning needs of individuals can be effectively and efficiently met.

9. The positive attitude of individuals toward what they are supposed to learn but also to the learning process itself can be enhanced. Students generally prefer the use of media as a means of studying. This is due to motivational aspect and the contribution that media can make to a persons effective learning.

10. The role of the instructor can be appreciably changed in positive directions. The use of media is advantageous to the instructor. First, much for the burden for repeated explanation of content and skills is eliminated. Second, by not having to present as much information verbally, more important aspects of a subject can be given attention. Third, the instructor can increase the opportunity for him to fulfill the role of being a consultant and advisor to the student.
