What led to the writing of the Declaration Of Independence and the Revolutionary War?

French and Indian War Britain helped colonists defeat French in war Britain needed money to pay for war expenses Taxed colonists, restricted settlements and limited self-govt.

Stamp Act First direct British tax on American colonists. Instituted in November, Every newspaper, pamphlet, and other public and legal document had to have a Stamp, or British seal, on it. The Stamp, of course, cost money. The colonists didn't think they should have to pay for something they had been doing for free for many years. Seeing the hostile reaction in the colonies, the British government repealed the Stamp Act in March 1766 The Stamp Act gave the colonists a target for their rage. The Sons of Liberty was formed in response to this Act.

Sugar Act 1764 Act that put a three- cent tax on sugar and increased taxes on coffee, indigo, and certain kinds of wine. Besides, the taxes were enacted (or raised) without the consent of the colonists. This was one of the first instances in which colonists wanted a say in how much they were taxed.

Colonists react… “No Taxation Without Representation! ”

Colonists Want CHANGE! Through the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and other taxes, the British tried to collect taxes that the American people considered harsh.Sugar ActStamp Act The American people also thought that they should be able to send their own people to Britain's Parliament or at least vote for Britain's lawmakers. The combination of the harsh taxes and the lack of an American voice in Parliament gave rise to the famous phrase "taxation without representation."

Boston Tea Party Even though the price of British tea was getting cheaper, Colonists were still being taxed. Colonists were angry about this tax!

Boston Tea Party Lower price on British tea Colonists still pay taxes Boycotted British tea Sons of Liberty dressed in disguise and dumped British tea overboard On the evening of December 16, 1773, a group of men calling themselves the "Sons of Liberty" went to the Boston Harbor. The men were dressed as Mohawk Indians. They boarded three British ships, the Beaver, the Eleanor and the Dartmouth, and dumped forty-five tons of tea into the Boston Harbor

King George III passes the “Intolerable Acts” The Royal Navy blockades the Boston Harbor so no colonial goods could be sent out until tea was paid for. Colonists had to quarter the British soldiers. The King assigned British General Gage to be Massachusetts governor.

Why were the “Intolerable Acts” so intolerable? The Intolerable Acts were laws that were really punishments that King George III put on the colonies. He did this to the Colonists because he wanted to punish them for dumping tea into the harbor at the Boston Tea Party. King George III Boston Tea Party
