INTRODUCTION TO NU499 CAPSTONE Week One Seminar – Course Basics

ATTENDANCE AND ROLL CALL  This is a flex seminar  If you are here and this is not your professor – please let me know  Make sure to clarify all specific information with your own professor.

COURSE SYLLABUS  Each student is required to read the course syllabus  The syllabus is located in Doc Sharing and also under the syllabus tab in the course.  The syllabus includes grading scale, list of all major assignments, and course policy information.  Are there any questions about the syllabus??

INSTRUCTOR EXPECTATIONS  If the instructor s or calls you it is an expectation you will responded with 24 hours during the week or 48 over the weekend.  Your instructor will respond to your calls/ s in the same timeframe.  Check your and course announcements often to check for important course information.

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS  Three Part Nursing Paper  Learning Journals  Discussion Board

THREE PART PAPER  Due in Week 3, 5, 8  Based on a Nursing Issue  APA Format  Each worth 220 points  Start planning NOW – part 2 is a literature review that will take an extensive amount of time and effort.  Follow the Rubric!!  The expectation is that you will be writing at the BSN level, this means following APA, proper grammar usage, and use of the right type of resources/references.

LEARNING JOURNALS  Due in Week 2, 4, and 6  Each one has a rubric – follow it  APA  Each one has a topic assignment – you must stay on topic

DISCUSSION BOARD  Graded discussion board: 1, 2, 3, and 10  Follow rubric for guidelines on discussion board  Post by Saturday  Post 3 days  First post – 150 words  You may use discussion board in non-graded weeks but you are not required to do so.

GRADING  All work due by Tuesday 11:59 pm  If you are going to be late – contact BEFORE due date  You MAY be granted an extension  If you do not ask for an extension the work will be reduced by at least 10%  Please consult your professor for specific late work guidelines  If work is more than 1 week late without contact to the instructor it may not be accepted.  Use the Rubrics!!  The key is to communicate with your instructor. We can be flexible if needed but you have to contact us to discuss your options.

PRACTICUM!!  The other part of this course is your practicum hours.  You will spend 40 hours with your preceptor  You will spend 20 hours researching your Nursing Issue  Hours can be completed in anyway you like IE: all in one week or spread out over several weeks. Just have them all done by the end of the term. We suggest finishing by Week 8/9 if possible.

BEFORE YOU START!  Practicum Checklist  Data Form – in doc sharing  Plan of Study – in doc sharing  Choose Nursing Issue  Contact with Instructor and Preceptor  You MUST do all of the above BEFORE you start your hours or they will NOT be counted.

CHECKLIST Needs to have signature of Kaplan University Clinical Coordinator Should have been completed before the start of this course If you are not done – you need to contact Clinical Coordinator ASAP You can NOT start without this signed form If you have not started this process you need to contact instructor ASAP You can NOT proceed with coursework until your have your paperwork completed

DATA FORM  Doc Sharing  Fill out completely and accurately  Include all current contact info for yourself and preceptor  Please include your preceptor’s job title and position

PLAN OF STUDY  Doc sharing  Two pages – fill out both  First page – goals/objectives  Discuss with preceptor  Electronic signature  Page two – tentative schedule of hours

NURSING ISSUE  Must choose a Nursing Issue  Examples and Power point in Doc Sharing  Need to have instructor approval  Will be your topic for Three part paper, end of term presentation, and related to your practicum site.

COMMUNICATION  Instructor/Preceptor/Student communication  You will be required to have a phone conversation before you start your hours.  Your instructor will be contacting your preceptor during your term and at the end of the hours.  You and your preceptor will be required to fill out evaluations forms at the end of the practicum time.

PRESENTATIONS  PowerPoint presentations  Due Week 8  Presented in Week 8 or Week 9  Check course announcements for days/times for presentations  Mandatory to present  Tips for successful presentations in Doc Sharing

TIME LOG  Copy in Doc Sharing  Student’s responsibility to fill this out  Turn into drop box at Week 4 and Week 10  Must be turned in for hours to count  Time log is not worth any course points – will show up as a 0 in week 4 grade book.

ATTENDANCE TRACKING  Kaplan has an attendance policy  There are no assignments in Week 7 or Week 9  Since no assignments we need to make sure you are still attending  Now students are asked to post a comment in Ask the Prof in week 7 and week 9  Posting will mark you as attending

NEXT SEMINAR  Week 5  Will be offered as a Flex Seminar  Covers the last half of the term  Check course announcements for the days/times  If you attend another professors seminar please let that professor now and inform your own so you receive credit for attending.
